I have to agree with all of this; including (especially!) the hating Boston teams part. I have to give their front office full credit for pulling the trigger a year too early rather than a year too late. Which is what smart teams do.

Man, I remember being so PO'd about the Wings not signing those guys. Maybe it would have been different had they come to Motown, but as it turned out, maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that we couldn't get them.

...aaannnd, the Wings' freefall continues. 5 straight losses and 2 wins in the last 9. All in the midst of the most critical point of their season. Perhaps Yzerman did the right thing by not overpaying in a seller's market, but saving money isn't in and of itself a virtue (as far as running a pro sports franchise, anyway). You can save a whole lot of money by fielding an uncompetitive team.

Wings @ Senators on Monday might end up being close to a play-in game, at least for the Wings. If they lose that game, time to start thinking about the draft and re-starting the building process.

Brind'Amour: When Rantanen showed up, he said, "There’s four teams I’ll go play for and you’re not one of them."

Apparently those teams were Dallas, Edmonton, Florida, Toronto.

More reasons to hate the Panthers...Ekblad has been suspended 20 games for failing a drug test, testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

He'll be back in time for game 3 of the playoffs.

Oilers had the best offer and Leafs thought about the idea of dealing Marner for Rantanen (I think Marner refused to waive his NMC) so it makes sense those teams were in it.

              What was the Oilers' offer?

Don't know what it was. Might have misinterpreted it.

No word on the offer, but Oilers offered more money in extension talks than the Stars did (which is also an issue in the NHL since even more money from Edmonton being offered probably means less money he would make due to taxes).

If true, why did the 'Canes do the deal with the Avalanche in the first place?

There's speculation that it went down like this:

                      1. Rantanen wanted to have his cake and eat it too. He wanted to stay in Colorado for his price, or as close as he could get to it as possible. He did not think he was going to be traded.

                      2. The Avs were very nervous at the prospect of negotiating past the trade deadline, so they "threatened" to trade him to Carolina.* Rantanen's agent said they'd be fine with Carolina, thinking it was a negotiating ploy to get Rantanen to sign.**

                      3. The Avs ran with it, and the deal got done quickly. What if any direct interaction there was between Tulsky and Rantanen's agent is unknown, but the Avs told the Canes what the agent said, ie that Rantanen was open to playing there.

*Carolina is among the least desirable non-Canadian destinations for a contender (largely because RBA is a "love him or hate him" coach and Dundon is known as both a meddler and a cheapskate - the Canes' facilities are supposedly the worst in the league by far)

**Vancouver supposedly threatened Pettersson with a trade to Carolina to induce him to re-sign with the Canucks (Hmmmm)

I heard the issue there was that Edmonton didn't have the picks/prospects to make it happen. (This is what happens when you trade 1st rounders for Adam Henrique every year.)

I've been to the 'Canes facility twice to see hockey games. It's a college basketball arena (NC State) that's been converted into an ice rink, and that's exactly what it feels/looks like when you go in there. It's not a terrible experience to be honest, it just doesn't seem like a 'real' NHL hockey arena. On the plus side, they have really good beer concessions where you can buy bottles/cans of all kinds of craft beers (not just the usual stadium mass brands), although of course they pour the beer into a plastic cup before they let you go back out to the rink.

Red Wings played one heck of a road game tonight. Dominated most of the game against the Sens, and in the end a broken stick scramble ending up in the back of our net was the difference. We scored a game-tying goal that was late by just a second or so.

I'm starting to suspect that it just might not be our year...

Players were polled a while ago and Carolina was voted the worst facility by a lot.

Interesting. Sounds like players don't like the dressing rooms. Attached a snippet of the player poll from The Athletic.

Watched the Sportsnet highlight package on YouTube and... they didn't show the non-goal at the end. Time to fire another intern. (The NHL.com highlight package had it.)
