First day at the driving range...

Well, I stepped up w/ my 3 wood and smacked the ever loving piss out of the ball, it went straight as an arrow and high as a kite. I hit the ball about 200 yards. I felt good, I was like, golf is f'ing easy.

Well...my next shot went shooting to the left. I pulled it, I suppose. My next shot went shooting out to the right, like a screwball. It wasn't until my 10th or 11th ball that I hit another straight one, LOL... Golf is not so f'ing easy.

I grab my irons next and try to hit a few off the tee starting from 3 iron through 9 iron. Well, for some strange reason I hit perfectly straight w/ my 5 iron but never had any luck at all w/ the others. Off the tee I seemed to hit fairly well, but when I put it on the ground, I topped it a lot. I was sweating my balls off, I didn't know swinging a golf club would be so grueling. I went through 89 balls w/ 1 left....

I took out the driver and gave it one last whack, another perfect straight as an arrow shot about 200 yards. Well, golf might not be my game, but I honestly had a lot of fun, even though I completely suck. I'll keep practicing and hope to go to a course this weekend w/ some friends to really find out how much I like playing the sport.

Just thought I'd let you guys know about my first golf experience.

another addict. I hit my 4 wood about 170-180, so you are going the same distance as me, just about.

The only wood I have is my 3. How long have you been golfing?

since I was 14, but only play a few times a year until the last few months when I've been starting to take it up more. So I'd say I'm still a big time beginner just like you.

congrats Steve on enjoying it! It's a really fun game to play, kinda tough to explain why you enjoy it though. It's something that all golfers understand, but non golfers just wonder.

I'm going to try and start hitting the range twice a week to get my swing better, i know the weather will turn crappy in a month or two, so gotta try and get some golfin in before the end of the year

Hit the links, Bro. The range is all good, but it's not golf. The fun and challenge of golf is playing the lies, the angles, around the trees, over the water, laying up, pitch and run, and, of course, putting. Golf is great. I nice 2-4 hours in the sun...beautiful backdrop....nothing better.

            Congrats!

I smell an OS Golf Outing next summer!!!

I can't wait to play this weekend, I know I'm gonna suck ***, but I just want to see what it's like. OS golf outing sounds interesting.

Re: First day at the driving range...

Congrats Steve! The challenging thing about your swing is that the smallest little detail will send the ball flying to the right or left. Whether your hands are too far inside/outside or your hips are opening too quickly etc... It's definately challenging to mimic the same perfect swing time in and time out. Then try to do it with different clubs!

Before you know it, you'll be blasting your driver a good distance. It took me a while, but once I trusted myself enough to "let go" and not hold back, I was hitting my driver around 275. For me at least, that was the hardest part. I'd always hold back a little because I had no idea where the ball was going. Now I'm confident it's going straight.....and if I mis**** it a little, I know it won't go 50 yards to the right/left like it used to!

Now if I could only get my short game going. I suck around the greens with pitching and chipping...

I always felt that I was wasting my time at the driving range. I'd rather be out on a course, putting myself in the situations that Clay described. I took up golf 2 years ago, and love it. The only unfortunate thing for me is that there aren't many golf courses here in Delaware. I'll travel into PA, and down to the Maryland beaches, as often as I can.

Glad youre enjoying it. I used to top my irons all the time but i learned to keep your head focused all the way through.

Steve, I'm the exact same way with my irons. The only one I seem to be able to hit consistently is my 5 iron. lol I'm much better with the woods. Golf is definitely a frustrating but rewarding sport. You could be playing terrible, saying that you'll never play again, and one pure shot can make the whole day.

i had a "miracle" moment, where after a friend (who's not that good) gave me a grip recommendation (I started doing the finger cross thing), and fixing some other problems, i can hit most of my irons pretty well. I'm still not consistant, but i used to never hit my 3 or 4 at all, but now if i connect it's pretty darn good. Just takes practice and a bit of luck. Hitting that 3 iron into a green just once makes it all worth it though. That's the joy of golf, that one, and only one, shot can keep you coming back and make everything worth it.

If you live in Delaware, perhaps you have played Wyncote off RT 1 if I remember correctly in the Kennett Square, PA area. I used to play there and at Hartefeld Nat'l during the summer when I was home from college (I'm from the King of Prussia area). Hartefeld (I have a feeling I'm spelling that wrong) is private now, but those were a couple of good tracks that aren't too far from DE.

Played Bulle Rock in MD yet? I never made it down there but it's supposed to be great.
