She is doing it for publicity, not for the love of the game and competition. I can see in 5-10 years from now if she has dominated her tour, then she has some merrit to do so, otherwise its a cheap publicity stunt, just like most of her tournaments.
Why does it matter? You act like she's hurting you or something.

No, she does it for the reason we are discussing it here, she wants people to talk about her and how great she is. If there was no LPGA, then i would say sure, go ahead and try out, but they LPGA has spent millions of dollars and half a century building a division for women to play in. We all know she is a good player, but that doesnt give her the right to snub her own division, and pretty much proclaim that the LPGA isnt enough of a challenge for her. I would be upset if were in the LPGA, becuase pretty much everyone has beaten her there.
If she takes a spot from a guy then that guy should practice more and not be last on the list. It's not her fault that they allow her to qualify and there's nothing wrong with her trying.

The problem with that is, is the complete arrogance she is displaying. No one is saying she isn't good. She is, and will be an unbelievable golfer. The point people are making is that she needs to prove herself on her own tour first. A U.S. Open course will eat "pieces of sh*t" like her for breakfast. <--just using a Happy Gilmore quote to fit the mantra of this discussion. I really don't think she is a "piece of sh*t". Maybe a few years down the road with a couple WOMEN'S majors under her belt, then she can go for it.

Pretty much the old saying...."biting off more than you can chew" applies here.

BTW, whoever thinks she is hot needs serious help.

If having complete arrogance meant you couldn't play in your league/tour of choice, would there be any athletes left?? Logic like that would have supported preventing Michael Jordan and Larry Bird from playing in the NBA.

The naysayers on this topic all have one thing in common. None of them have given a factual based arguement why Wie should not try to qualify. Do you know what the USGA rules are for being able to qualify for the US Open. This is straight from the USGA web site..."The event is open to professionals and amateurs with a Handicap Index of 1.4 or lower". Over 8,000 golfers have met that qualification rule and are attempting to qualify for the US Open. Are most of them in over their head? Of course they are. But they have a dream to get hot at the right time and make it. If Wie meets the qualification rules (which she does), it is her right to try to qualify. I'm sure a lot of people will not like it and hope she doesn't make it. But it can't be denied that she deserves the chance as much as any of the other 8,000 qualifiers.

Why does she need to prove anything on the tour? If she can qualify then that's proving enough. It makes no sense to handicap a golfer because you don't think they've "paid their dues". I really don't understand why people are getting so worked up over this.

If she earns her way, what is the big deal?
Should basketball players have to "dominate" in college before they can enter the NBA? Should baseball players have to "dominate" A, AA, AAA, before they are allowed to enter the MLB?
No special passes. BUT, if she qualifies by the same standard as men do, then I am fine with it.

Update on her progress...Wie finished 1st in the local qualifying tournament yesterday, finishing ahead of all 39 other male and 1 other female player. The top 3 finishers move on to the 36 hole sectional qualifying on June 5th.

Here, here. Took the words right out of my mouth.

It feels like I'm reading comments that I would expect to read 50 years ago. Times have changed. Athletes have changed. I keep reading how she needs to prove herself on the LPGA. I don't understand this argument. She has stated many times before, her goal is to be a regular on the PGA. If that's the case, what she's doing IS the right thing to do. Measure yourself up to the competition that you're striving to compete with, not lesser players.

By some of the arguments I'm hearing, Lebron should still be in college, Alexander Ovechkin should still be in the AHL, and a large number of baseball players should still be in the minors.

This is a 16 year-old girl. She doesn't need to prove anything to anyone on any tour. She has to prove it to herself that she is able to compete on the PGA. What better way to do that than to compete against that calibre of play?

I'm 110% behind her. She obviously needs to convince a large number of people on these boards, let alone the media and public. I say go for it, good luck and in ten years, what we're discussing here will be a moot point. At that point, mark my words, we'll be wondering if she has what it takes to win a major on the PGA. She's that good.

Let's get out of the Stone Age, folks.

Why does she have to play on the PGA Tour?? Why can't she just stay on her own Tour? Dude, if you had a choice to play in a women's softball league or a men's softball league, which one would you play? That is why there is a WOMEN'S PGA TOUR!! Maybe she has a d*ck or something?:y4:

I don't know why I'm bothering responding to your ignorance, but here goes:

It depends on my goals which one I would choose. But this is such an unfair comparison, it shouldn't be discussed at all. Nobody in their right mind would suggest that women and men play professional athletics at the same level. Which is why, if she qualifies, she SHOULD be allowed to play in as many men's tournaments as she wants. It's called setting the bar high. And before you regurgitate the same "Why doesn't she just play on the LPGA?" line, understand that she is still not allowed to be a full-time player on the LPGA until she turns 18. She's been given a "half-excemption" for this year, allowing her to play in something like 7 or 8 tournaments.

How she fills the rest of her schedule is none of mine or your business. If she qualifies fair and square, all the power to her.

As far as your softball question, if I was looking to pick up chicks, I'd play in the women's tournament. But if I want to compete at the highest level available to me, I'd be playing in the men's league.
