Re: Michelle Wie will attempt to qualify for 2006 U.S. Open

Age isn't nothing but a number, and gender is nothing but a social classification and discrimination.

Point is. It doesn't matter how old she is, what race she is, or what gender she is. If the girl can play, let her play. If she wants to try and make the cut at a PGA even, let her, she's old enough to make her own choices. If it's a mistake on her part, she'll learn from it. Make the cut and that's good for her. Missed the cut and I applaud your effort. She's a competitor and I'd rather her set her goals high so even if she doesn't hit them, she'll still be in better position than if she we're to set her goals where OTHER people think they should be.

If she believes she can handle a course from the men's tees, so be it. She can nearly drive 300 yards. If my 10 year old can drive that long off a tee, I'll let him play with the big boys.

And how would you know she's arrogant? What makes you the professional critic to claim her arrogance

    By definition (per dictionary.com):
    Arrogant:
    1. The state or quality of being arrogant; overbearing pride.
    2. overbearing pride evidenced by a superior manner toward inferiors

Explain to the rest of us what qualifies her attempt be better at what she does as arrogance.

She doesn't need to prove anything to you or me or anyone else.
    1. In 2002, Wie became the youngest player to qualify for an LPGA event, the Takefuji Classic

2.In 2003, she shot a 66 in a round at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, tying the amateur record for a women's major championship

    3. Ernie Els remarked, "Give her another couple years to get stronger, she can play on the PGA TOUR."

    4. Wie, at the age of 16, has an average drive of about 280 yards.

    5. Arnold Palmer stated in 2003 that "she's probably going to influence the golfing scene as much as Tiger, or more. She's going to attract people that even Tiger didn't attract, young people, both boys and girls, and families."

    6. Second at the SBS Open at Turtle Bay 2005

    7. Second at the LPGA Championship (2005), one of the women's majors

    8. In February 2006 she was ranked third in the first release of the Women's World Golf Rankings and soon afterwards she moved up to second

    9. 2006 LPGA season, Wie earned US$73,227 for a third place finish in the Fields Open in Hawaii and US$108,222 for finishing in a tie for third in the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

    10. In May 2006 Wie made the cut in the SK Telecom Open on the Asian Tour. She is the second woman to make the cut at a men's tournament in South Korea; LPGA star Se Ri Pak finished tied for 10th in the lower-tier KPGA Tour SBS Pro-Golf Championship in 2003. The Asian Tour is the highest ranking men's tour on which a woman has made a cut since Babe Zaharias did so on the PGA Tour in 1945

    11. On May 16, Wie finished first in a local qualifying tournament for the Men's U.S. Open. According to officials with the sponsoring United States Golf Association, Wie is the first woman to ever win a local qualifier for the men's Open

How old is she....16? Enough said. Hate her or love her, that's probably fine with her. She didn't ask for your love or your hype. MJ has haters, Kobe has haters, Gretzky has haters, Tiger has haters, Jerry Rice has haters. But why do we hate? Why is there hype?

Because there's obvious talent. To deny that would be blind. To say they shouldn't try maximize their talent is arrogance in itself, claiming you have self-importance over another individual by saying you know what they should or shouldn't do.

My hat's off to you Miss Wie.

Again, another post that's right on the money. If what she's attempting to do is good enough for Ernie and Arnie, f*ck, it should be good enough for the rest of us. Quite frankly, looking at the accomplishments that BiggestKJ listed, this SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL has more than earned the right to set her own goals and expectations.

I wish people would stop the hatin and enjoy the talent. But I guess that's too much to ask.

Its not hatin. If you have read my other posts, I said that if she is ready, more power to her. Annika Sorenstam has stated numerous times that the PGA Tour is out of her reach, and this is the best female golfer in the world. Are you going to tell me that Michelle Wie is better than Annika right now? Please don't.

When Michelle starts dominating the women's tour, then she should get the sponsors exemptions. Until then, she needs to PROVE to the PGA Tour that she is ready. I find it insulting to some of the guys who have busted their butts to get to the PGA. Rich Beem was selling cell phones making peanuts for money to get where he is. There are other great stories as well. I know one guy slept in his car before the Western Open I believe. He had next to nothing. Some guys have worked dead-end jobs just to get a chance and now maybe one of those guys might get bumped because she is... a female with talent-- which in turn causes controversy--which in turn causes spark for debate--which in turn causes ratings--which is exactly what the PGA
              tour wants.

If she qualifies for the U.S Open, then congratulations she earned it. Otherwise she needs to play on her own tour. I guess you could say I have a little Hootie Johnson in me.:y4:

I'm just old school like that. If you think I'm bad, Lord only knows what is being said around the PGA Clubhouse.

Well, she may not be up to the level of your avatar, but she'd qualify for a ride on the Soul Pole... When she's of age, of course.... Plus, ever since high school I've had a thing for Asian chicks...

Is that not the title of this thread? I'm not talking about the sponsor's exemptions, even though I have an opinion on that which I'll get into. But the title of this thread is "Michelle Wie will attempt to qualify for 2006 U.S. Open". Yet you, along with a bunch of others jumped all over her for trying.

As far as the exemptions go, in a perfect world, those would go to the journeymen of the PGA. But quite frankly, we're not the corporations forking over millions of dollars to put these events on. If these corporations think that inviting Michelle Wie will help them recoup some of the cash they've fronted, then it's none of our business.

Did Lebron, Kobe, KG, Jermaine, Rashard Lewis have to go to college because arguably the best basketball player ever attended UNC, because HE felt that he wasn't ready to make a jump to the NBA?

Does Ken Griffey Jr. have to play through the minors because other baseball stars had to fight from Rookie ball to Triple A to get their shot at the Majors?

Not everyone has to go through the same hardships. Rich Beem? The guy who slept in his car? I respect your hard work and I feel bad for your hardships.

Michelle doesn't need to dominate the women's tour before doing anything else. Nor does she need to sell cell phones or sleep in her car to prove her worth. Some have the hard way in, some have it easy. So what?

Oh yeah, and you're right only the Lord knows what they're saying in the clubhouse. But as far as we know, a pro golfer has praised her future, a legend has shown his admiration, and the man known as Tiger has back her on ESPN radio. To me, I would think that would be ok enough. Did I mention that they were coming from the MEN's clubhouse?

Michelle Wie needs to do what Michelle feels is best for HERSELF for HER FUTURE. Doing anything else wouldn't be what's best for her. End of story.

His opinon, my opinion, your opinion. They each weigh equally. Why? Take note of my last statement in my last post.

He talks about the fun of the game. Why that away from someone who wants to play in the tourney. Also, about he thinks a "man" is being deprived of the spot. Gimme a break. If he thinks she should prove herself in the LPGA first, why should he worry then about man's spot being taken if he's doubting her chances at making the cut.

Notice all those who are praising her? Tiger, Arnold, Ernie. Successful pro golfers. Of course, they have nothing to envious or jealous about.

Please. US Open champion or not. What has this guy done in his career to merit his opinion. 8 top ten finishes in the last 12 years. 1 even won.

Obviously, there will be players on both sides of this argument. Campbell's upset about the fact that Omega invited Wie out to the European Masters event. Again, in a perfect world, that goes to a male. But until there's a Michael Campbell Invitational, he along with anyone else that has a problem with Wie getting a sponsor's invite doesn't have a leg to stand on.

He needs to remember that it's because of said sponsor's money that he's able to make a living off a GAME. And when he brings up the fun factor, what's more fun than experiencing something that's so rare? Same curiosity brought billions of dollars to golf when Tiger arrived on the scene. He played a game nobody was familiar with, and now Wie is doing the same 10 years later.

Men like Michael Campbell and Vijay Singh are type of men who also believed that blacks shouldn't be allowed to play baseball, or vote or read for that matter. Hopefully, these narrow thinkers will be weeded out and eliminated if they the can't progress with the times. When professional golfers give opinions like these, publically, it make you wonder why they deserve to have the privelidge of making lots of money for playing a game. Everyone should realize, that playing golf for money is a priviledge not a right. Each organization makes its own rules governing participatiion. If the PGA allows women to qualify, there is no further discussion necessary.

I have no problem with her tryin, but its just a principle of proving herself at the ****** level first whether see make it or not its just the principle and the respect. for example jackie robinson proved himself before he was acepted to the MLB. Im sure all those ladies in racing prove them self before they went into the big circut.

I dont want to come off as an womanizer or anything cuz god know that I love the ladies, but those guys you named proved them self whether it was in high school or the pros...... wie havent even won a lpga tourny yet, atleast win one before you try out for the men's side, but if you have the oppurtinuty to do something you want just do it....but make a statement and make it to the finale round atleast.
