The guy tries to discredit her by saying that since she didn't qualify that she shouldn't have tried but that makes no sense at all.

Your analogy makes no sense whatsoever.

You cannot compare women to men and men to women in Golf.

Michelle Wie beating out a ton of men MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
Golf is the type of sport where the genetic makeup of someone makes no difference whatsoever. It is about balance, mechanics and composure. It is not about sheer strength, aggression and agility. With these factors taken out, it opens the playing surface for all types of people. You then put top-notch technology in their hands, the sky is the limit.

This isn't about bashing women. Women most definitely have a place in sports. Its just that the sport of Golf takes away from the typical aggressive male psyche. Do you see women competing professionally in baseball, basketball, football and hockey on the men's level?? Do you see my point?

Michelle Wie beat a number of guys today who are household names. There is no doubt she is talented. It just isn't saying much. It is a slap in the face to a lot of male golfers out there either trying to make it or having to compete when the fact of the matter is you are competing against the course.
you do realize that statistics can show that women cannot hit the ball as far as men, right? I'd call that a "sheer strength" difference....You are right, golf is a lot of other things as well, not as physical as other sports, but to completely discount strength is wrong IMO.

Though if we assume your stance that strength, etc don't matter then we have another issue. If it's a slap in the face of men then they need to get past the "OMG, I just got beat by a girl!!!111!!! That suxorz" attitude, because they just got mentally outworked, the fact she was female doesn't matter, according to your theory.

I don't think women should just get handed exemptions to things, make it a spectacle, but Wie qualified just like everyone else, and did pretty well. Any guy who got as far as she did wouldn't catch crap, people would just say "Try harder next year"

I don't follow pro golfers so I don't know the whole story of Wie, but I wonder why does she want to play with men?

I'm guessing she believes men are better than women so she wants to go up against the best.

I remember their was a big deal over that Swedish female golfer trying to qualify in a male tournament. She's suppose to be the best female in the world and she couldn't even make the cut. That shows you how low the level of the competition is in the LPGA when you compare it to the PGA.

Im not discrediting her, all im sayin is if she wants to do this make a statement... she got a chance to make history. It wouldnt make any sense if she entered then finished last in the feild.... it defeats the purpose, we all can see she is trying to make history if not she would have just tried to win a LPGA tourny first.

how about this though and i think it's a grand idea. How about she accomplish something in the ladies tour before trying to make a mark in the mens'? I can't help but start to think this is turning more of a PR marketing scheme at the expense of a very talented young lady. She's young and impressionable so i imagine she'll listen to advice and so far it just seems to me that the advice she's being given is nothing but bad advice.

By that logic, the only people who should try to qualify for the US Open are people who have accomplished something on other tours. Do you know how many people that would eliminate. Most of the people who tried to qualify haven't done anything on any tour (Hooters, Nationwide, Europe, LPGA, etc.). Many of them are PGA members who are teaching pros who simply have a dream of getting hot at the right time and making it into the US Open.

The tournament is called us OPEN for a reason. It is OPEN to anyone (not gender specific) who has better than a 1.4 handicap. Based on your logic, Tadd Fujikawa a 15 year old male from Hawaii who did qualify wouldn't have been given the chance since he hasn't done anything on any other tours. Should he have not been allowed to qualify either? Was his attempt to qualify some PR move?

What, like finishing second in the LPGA Championship last year? Or 5th this year? Or how about finishing 3rd in the Kraft Nabisco this year? She is not a slouch of a golfer but it would seem that you cannot get past the fact that she is a she to look at the talent that she possesses. The ladies tour is small peanuts in the golfing world, really a joke overall, and she and those around her realize that she has the ability to accomplish something on the men's tour which is where the real talent lies. I cannot think of one way in which tempering her mental game by trying to compete against a set of more highly skilled players is going to hurt him in the long run, maybe you can explain how challenging oneself is such a negative?

On a related note, Wie was way off the cut for the John Deere and couldnt even finish the second round because she got too hot. Get on the damn womens tour. You cannot compete right now with the men.

She is 16, she is still the best 16 year old player in the world. Tiger wasn't making cuts at this age either on the PGA.

At 16 Tiger was dominating the US Junior National Championships like he was supposed to.
