Got my first hole in one on Riviera yesterday - sort of funny because I missed my first hole in one in real golf on saturday by about 1 1/2 feet (the course was wet, i'm convinced it would have gone in if it was dry!)

          ^^^ Nice

Why isn't a hole in one considered the greatest single feat in sports? I mean the probability of one has to be lower than say, throwing a no-hitter, perfect game, hitting for the cycle etc.

I guy at my course has had tons of holes in ones. He has had 12 on this short 130 yard par 3. Hes been playing for 50 years though, so that increases the chances i would assume.

I did some internet (may not be true, but whatever) research...

In 1999, Golf Digest reported, "One insurance company puts a PGA Tour pro's chances at 1 in 3,756 and an amateur's at 1 in 12,750.
              http://golf.about.com/od/faqs/f/holeinoneodds.htm

There have been approximately 150,000 major league baseball games played since 1901, the advent of modern baseball. With two starting pitchers per game providing a total of approximately 300,000 perfect game opportunities to date, the odds have been approximately 14 in 300,000, or about 1 in 20,000, of throwing one.
              http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0721085111.htm

I can't find anything for hitting for the cycle, yet.

To put things into perspective, even a 5-year old can hit a hole in one. (Even when it doesn't really count.)
Stay up-to-date with the latest sports news and scores from NBC Sports.

                Re: First Hole in One

I did some quick research for the cycle - since 1901 there have been 241 cycles hit in MLB.

                HTML Code:
                http://www.retrosheet.org/cycles_chron.html

Using the estimation of 150,000 games played in the same amount of time that you provided above and assuming that for each game played 18 players have a chance at hitting a cycle the odds of hitting a cycle are approximately:

                1:11,200

A crack staff of researchers here lol. Thanks for the info. That's amazing that a hole in one isn't as rare as you'd think considering the amount of space involved and all the variables.

                      Re: First Hole in One

I hit a hole in one once. A REAL one. Like, on a real golf course : ) And I SUCK at golf! I did it when I was about 19 or so (i'm 43 now) and I won $1200. I did it a Squaw Creek Country Club in Weatherford, TX (maybe Grandbury?) and they had this "pot" that you could put money into at the pro shop and when someone hit an ace (is that the right slang?) then you'd get what ever was in the pot. Some serious money for a 19 year old. I spent it all on beer and cigarettes.

Seriously, I sucked big time and it was only like my 3rd or 4th time to play on a real course. I did play on this par 3 course a few times before. Rockwood was the name of the par 3 course.

That was a very long time ago.

On other funny thing- when I was like 17 or 18 (a senior in HS) I was with these 4 HOT babes and we were cruisin' around by the Colonel Country Club Golf course in Ft Worth, Tx and one of the girls knew I had a bag of clubs in the trunk of my 1978 Camaro (it was a piece of junk. The car that is) and she said something to the effect of "lets pull over and watch you hit a golf ball" and I was like "Nah...I suck..." And I DID! I mean, I could NOT hit a golf ball without a SERIOUS, and I mean SEEEERIOUS slice but I figured what the heck so we pulled over at this park right in front of the course and I drove a ball with my 1 wood about 250 or more yards PERFECTLY! I am talking an INCREDIBLE once in a lifetime drive (at least for someone like me) And they were all like "WOW! YOU'RE SO AWESOME!"

                      LOL!

I said " alright, thats enough of that" and we left. I always thought that was so funny because I had NEVER in my life before (or since) hit a golf ball so well. I mean it was a Tiger Woods shot! I'll never forget that day.

LOL! That was great! And yes, not too shabby for hitting a golf ball. Then again, I wonder what Tiger gets on average per swing?
