    Golf set question

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to golf. I've played 2 games with my buddies and am sometime making par =]

Not very good, but I like it as a fun sport o do on the side of hockey.

What would you recommend I buy. I've been using my friends set and doing pretty okay. Me like my Hybrids, a lot.

I'm 5'1 but have tons of growing to do so probably gunna grow a lot. Like I said, I don't want to be pro or anything.

    Any recommendations on clubs?

Slazenger makes a pretty good starter set that has hybrids.. Its 300$ at Dicks ( sometimes you can find them online ) for the 09 versions.. WRATH ATX I believe.

I think you can find those at Golf Galaxy as well ( have them online too ).

The set has everything except a 5W.

The driver is erratic distance wise.. You will drill one for 280+ yards then turn around and hit one maybe 200. The sweet spot is pretty small I reckon. Other than that the clubs are super.. especially the irons.

If you're just starting, i'd go with a used set off of ebay...nike slingshots irons are ugly as hell, but incredibly easy to hit and a very good club for beginners, and shouldnt be too expensive as theyre four or five years old now. As far as Drivers and hybrids, you can't really go wrong with any of them as long as they are name brand, go whack a few at the local golf shop, then find them on ebay (they cost too much at golf shops).

Its all about preference mainly when it comes to clubs...i'm a 1 handicap and play with x14 pro series irons and the nike ignite driver...so, newer isnt necessarily always better

Yeah go ebay or find a small local club shop that sells used clubs. Go cheap until you are ready to spend real money to get the good stuff.

Me too! I have the iron set too.

You could looked at the Nike ignite set. You can get the set for around $350.

I like my Slingshot irons...they're fairly forgiving and good for me (a beginner who doesn't golf regularly enough).

For him I'd recommend a cheapo 100 buck set until he fills out his height...not sure how old he is, but he could possibly grow a foot in a couple years making these clubs obsolete.

I also started with a cheapo set just to make sure I'd actually golf enough...sucks putting tons of cash into something you don't end up using much.

Thanks guys. I think I may use my friends set until I grow a bit more.

Hopefully by then, if still golfing, I will get some decent intermittent set.

I would recommend against getting a cheap set.. I did that and I shot around 110 for 5 years then I decided to just get an intermediate set ( waited that long because I wanted to be better before I spent money ) and from the very first time out I cut my strokes by 12.. Now I shoot in the low 80s with those same clubs.

Skip the cheapos and go right for some intermediate clubs.

Yea, I was thinking of doing that. Like, I am a beginner but I do plan on being intermittent sometime in the near future and dont wana waste money..

This is what i exactly what i did. After playing a few months of playing with an old set and after i deciding i like the game of golf and would be playing for awhile. I went straight towards an intermediate clubs. It is worth the extra $ to do so. I am still looking to complete my custom set, just missing is some new fairways woods.

Also it really is so much more fun playing with new Nikes rather then Slazengers or some sort.

                    Golf is darn expensive.

I actually got a chance to use the Slazengers I mentioned earlier ( bro uses them ) and I LOVE the irons in that set.. Very solid.

                        Re: Golf set question

If you're a beginner, I'd recommend either the Pinemeadow Excel Mid Launch Plus iron set of the Pinemeadow Command Q iron set. Pinemeadow makes "ripoff" sets of brand name clubs, and while IMO they're not as good as the brand name, they're definitely alot better than the crappy RAM sets you see so many golfers start with and they're dirt cheap.

I started with a RAM set for my first few years golfing, I was stuck golfing 110-120 on a regular basis. I found Pinemeadow and decided to give it a try, I could instantly see my shots going straighter and farther. I can golf 90 these days, while I watch the person I golf with shoot 85 or better with these clubs.

They only cost $150ish. Quality of guaranteed for a year. Plus they have a no questions return policy over the first year. You can view their stuff at pinemeadowgolf.com. I'd avoid the Excel Strongs though, I've heard bad things. Overall though, I think they're a great club for beginners and for $150 will get you at least a couple years worth of use.

All that being said, I'm starting to get the itch to upgrade to a real set soon. I've played with the X22s a bit and love how they feel...and I see they can be had on Ebay for under $400. I wouldn't be surprised to make the move before the end of this year lol.

It just depends if you're ready and able to make that commitment. I wasn't about to drop 700 bucks on a set of clubs when I didn't know how regularly I'll be playing.

If you're sure you'll be playing very often, it's obviously a good idea to get a good set of clubs...
