Lateral hazard? For hitting a tree? Help!

Can someone please explain this to me, I was perplexed.

My wife and I were playing TW10 the other night, her drive hit a tree by the fairway. "Lateral Hazard" came up on the screen and she had to take a stroke penalty? For hitting a tree?? I've never heard of that. I thought you only had to take a stroke OB or in the drink?

I thought if you hit a tree near a fairway, you just play it from there. Maybe the ball went off way more to the right of the screen than we realized?

They're calling the pines needles in the game a lateral hazard. It's happened to me more than a few times. The game isn't exactly strict with lies. I've hit it into trees several times, and then my next shot shows a clear patch to the green, etc. They've dumbed down programming to make the game easier.
