Tiger 10 Wii question for those who play golf
I am a beginner and would like to know if playing Tiger 10 has any impact (good or bad) on your actual golf swing. At first I thought it might help, but things I am reading suggest that may not be the case.
Thanks.DON'T PANICTags: None -
Re: Tiger 10 Wii question for those who play golf
Not really, golf in real life is a very specific skill, no matter how good of an athlete you are, you really need to learn the fundamentals and what it takes to make a good swing.
You see many great athletes who stink at golf and some who are excellent golfers. If you're a good athlete with good hand eye coordination you can become a good golfer, with this caveat, you NEED to have someone teach you the right way.
Once I became obsessed with golf I had instruction from a former mini-tour player from Texas. That combined with hitting literally about 1000 balls a day and I went from shooting 90 from the white tees to breaking par from the back tees on any course in a little over a year.
I watched the pros on the range at Bethpage for a couple of hours on Wednesday. 99% of the guys have the same action through the ball and when they practice all their balls look exactly the same from player to player, same trajectory every single time no matter what club they're hitting. They're like robots (in a good way), it's like you could build a 3 inch PVC pipe and their ball would travel through that EXACT same tube 9 times out of 10. It looks more like the golf testing robot (Iron Byron) is hitting the ball and not humans. 99% of the guys hit the ball dead nut straight every time with either a 3 yard fade or draw. The balls are landing in a pile.
You think Fred Funk is a short knocker? He carries the ball from what my eye could tell about 255-260 every time. The other guys may carry it between 15-30 farther, but everyone has pretty much the same trajectory. The only guy I saw who wasn't landing them in a pile was Padraig Harrington, he couldn't control his draw, and you saw what happened on the course. The guy wins majors with a fade and now he wants to hit a draw. That's golf though, I guess they get bored with hitting perfect shots 99 times out of 100 and want to tinker with something new.
On the course I saw Chad Campbell hitting some pull hooks in his practice round and he wound up playing poorly. It only takes one little thing to throw your swing out of whack and you have to be able to identify it and correct it on the fly. If you don't figure it out and it gets in your head you wind up like David Duval, from number 1 who for a while no one wanted to play with (nothing personal) because he was snap-hooking balls out of bounds and shooting in the 80's. You don't want to see that when you're playing, you're afraid that voodoo might get you. Now that he's pudgy again his body and arms are in sync again. When you lose that much weight like he did sometimes you lose that robotic swing that you grooved over the years.
Go to an event and sit at the driving range for a few hours if you want to appreciate how good they are at that level. Guys you never heard of hit it just as good as the stars. Mickelson on the range hardly ever swung at his driver with that little fall back move when he really goes after it, I do the exact same thing when I go after it really hard. On the range Phil was hitting his driver perfect every single time with great rhythm. He would hit 3 perfect fades, followed by 3 perfect draws every time, the fades and the draws were like 5 yards tops. That's why he's criticized, because he'll go for the big drive when it's not even neccessary, his normal swing puts it in the fairway all the time. He's a bit of a ham (why he's popular) and will really go for the hero drive a bit too much, it's a hard temptation to resist. He was going to hire one of the big teachers a while back and the teacher said something like "I want you to sacrifice 20 yards, not go past parallel and hit the fairway every time" Phil said "No way!" Relationship over before it ever started. The teacher wouldn't take him.
If you saw these guys at the range you would wonder how they ever miss a shot on the course. It's mostly about putting on that level, if you watch golf you know that Sergio Garcia hits the ball better and more consistently than Tiger Woods. I play with guys who are 6-15 handicaps who put the ball infinitely better than Sergio Garcia. Sergio misses tons of short birdie putts and tons of 3-5 foot par putts that Tiger makes in his sleep. Nicklaus was the same way, if he needed a putt, whether it was 5 feet or 20 feet that ball at worst was hitting the hole. Sergio routinely can't even hit the hole from 6 feet. I'm no Sergio fan by any means but if he could putt he would BE Tiger Woods. -

That was a good read but that went way past does the wii version simulate a golf swing. You are spot on but wow that was a long no.Last edited by N51_rob; 06-22-2009, 06:08 PM.Moderator
