    Backspin on Approaches

I have never been too clear, in any versions of TW, including this latest, on how to know if an approach shot is going to have backspin or not.

I am speaking of the shorter irons, 7-8-9 etc. I don' think you generally get much backspin on longer irons even irl, but not sure.

It seems sort of random, sometime there is significant backspin, sometimes none, sometimes it even plants and rolls forward some. And I never know why

I don't see any difference in my swing. There is no way we can hit down on irons vs sweeping them etc. We just swing.

Is it sort of random, or can anybody offer some general rules of thumb on whether to plan for backspin or not? For these purposes lets just say, calm conditions, normal green speed.

It also seems to be complicated if a par 3 tee shot. Perhaps the mini teeing up we do on these holes affects backspin too.

Just like to get some handle on it , if possible, to plan my shots better

    Thanks for any input

    Re: Backspin on Approaches

It could be the slope of the green that makes it backspin more. Also, you could be accidentally adjusting loft and you dont even know it. If u move the right stick up or down before you line the shot up, the loft could be changed, which if u push the right stick up before the shot, you will get more distance and more backspin. Also it could be the green speed u r playing on - if ur playing on v fast greens it will backspin more than it will on slow greens, etc...
