It's to stop you needing to try and hit a 3/4 swing manually I guess.
Numbers are a bit fluid, as stats of various golfers change distances of clubs, but my wedges will generally go between 100-130 yards, and a 3/4 swing between 75 and 100 or so. If I happen to have left myself say, 55 yards from the flag, I could 3/4 my shortest wedge, then full loft it (front of stance), maybe slightly lower the contact point using the right stick, and a full back and forth with the left stick will probably go around 55 yards.
That's what I have used it for anyway. A better idea imo is just to leave yourself 100-150 yards from the pin if you know you can't get it close to the green. Saves tricky "in-between" shots.Comment
