Their player most likely has more skill points for the distance category.

he's right but there could be a couple of other things too. putting top spin on the ball to get a roll is very helpful in a lot of situations. it's probably too effective in the game b/c the bad thing is that it lowers the ball trajectory and also gets it on the ground quicker so that's fine in some situations and better with the win in your face but should be worse than the game makes it for playing in the rain or with the wind behind you (just a few examples). some people use it on every drive and get extra distance.

also, my cousin uses an intermediate player so i can see exactly what he does wrong. he waits too long in the backswing. if you wait too long to start bringing the club down you stop increasing the power and begin to lose it. watch the speed of your ball when you're hitting it. you should easily know if you released early so if you release early on purpose and it goes faster then there's your problem.

Yes, using topspin (actually, it's reducing backspin) by holding the right stick forward will give you extra distance on all your drives. I agree that it shouldn't be used all the time. I would think getting the ball higher in the air with the wind at your back would give you greater carry and greater overall distance.

since we're talking about it i've done a limited amount of experience and haven't found that to be true. have you tried it? in real golf (or just logically thinking about it in the game) you'd think letting the natural spin and trajectory carry the ball with the wind behind you would be best but it seems you still get more distance by adjusting the spin. what do you think?
