Approach shots in Links 04 - WTF?

I'm really digging Links but there is one thing that is driving me crazy. I'm in career mode, Intermediate difficulty. Let's say I'm 61y from the hole. I select chip from the shot selection (or it is done automatically) and I play with one of the wedges that was selected for me (I can't remember exactly which one right now). My max distance with the club shows 87y.

So playing with the swing meter, I calculate it at about two thirds minus the overswing, and I end up hitting the ball a good 90 yards!!! This is all the time, in all types of weather, so I know wind isn't a factor. I'm now figuring the power meter isn't based on the max distance of the shot type, but the club itself, so I could calculate the true power by looking at the distance of the straight shot. Is that what I need to do?

It get's me pretty frustrated because, really, what's the use of the swing meter and distance guage if it really doesn't matter anyway?

I have a bit of trouble hitting half a LW, some of it might be due to your lie, a downhill lie will cause the ball to come off a bit more 'hot' and can add some distance. With my LW i just take off more than I think I should, and it ends up ok

Chipping needs to be redone IMO. More often then not I'm 50ft or so from the pin, yet the chip meter is still set up for a 50 yard shot. It's hard to get the distance just right........

Re: Approach shots in Links 04 - WTF?

Yeah it seems close chip shots are set up with a max distance of 48y. If I'm 50ft I just divide 3 into 50, because that would give me the number of yards between me and the pin.

                50/3 = 16 and change

That's 1/3 of 48, so I use a third of the swing meter minus the overswing. I find it strange the close chip shots work fine. If I'm 47y away and the chip shot gives me a maximum distance of 48y, I'll usually have to use the entire meter to get it to the pin. It's just those approach shots where the max distance is 87y, then everything gets FUBARed.

And to comment on the other poster's suggestion, I'll overhit on an approach no matter what lie I have - uphill, downhill, leans or flat. The max distance and swing meters are screwy.

I think if you switch clubs and swing types you can get it to where the chipping meter's right...there's a bug of some sort in there, just have to mess around until you get the swing meter you like.

Also, I don't know if you carry a LW, but I recommend it. You can edit your profile and choose what clubs to bring, and like I do in real life I prefer to have that extra wedge (doesn't go as far as the SW). I think you can add it in the bag without a penalty, not sure if I had to remove my 5W or not. The LW when chipping doesn't roll as far when it lands, so you can hit it harder but not have it roll way past the hole

61 feet from the cup, i've started to hit flop shots instead of trying to chip. The ball usually goes straight up in the air and usually sticks close to the hole.
