A ghost is someones past archived round on a particular course. Each shot they played (could be 2 hours ago our 2 months ago) is saved in a database, when you select to play against a particular ghost those saved shots are referenced from the Db and displayed on screen. You know the final score of each ghost prior to starting your round, but when the round plays out you each progress hole-by-hole on the scorecard. It's a really slick system.
You have various options regarding selecting ghost opponents; total global score, friends scores, your prior scores etc. I believe the game attempts to match you with "similar" skilled ghosts (not sure of the exact logic here).
I really love the concept, as it represents playing against an actual human player instead of some generated AI results. It basically allows you to play against online opponents without the hassle of having to find an opponent and all the other associated online multiplayer BS. One of my favorite aspects is building up a person history on a specific course (I've played Augusta at least 15 times), and I can select to play against my prior best rounds.
