On the greens, I totally get how it's what you use to set power for a normal perfect swing on flat ground (or it feels that way and operates fine for me), but I'm a bit unsure what's really going on with that aiming point on other shots.

Here's my example, as I sit here right now...

I'm on Sawgrass 15th about to hit my 2nd.

I have 177y to the pin and I've been set up with 6 iron that will go 181y it says in the bottom right. In the distance, the aiming point is out there saying 177y, but I can move it slightly further away from me and it then reads 181y.

Why is it set up to 177y (in this case) and what does that mean?

    Is this a carry/rollout thing?

Or am I inducing more risk and requiring a more perfect swing to get that full 181y from the club and thus the game doesn't set me up with that full distance on the aiming point to start?

    Ok...next shot/question..

So now I purposely hit up a bit short (by clubbing down) for another example that I'm again not sure what's happening.

Now I'm hitting my 3rd from 27y out.
I've been equipped with a "default shot" 58 degree wedge that says it can go 109y.

My aiming point is set near the flag at 27y.

If I hit a "full power/perfect shot" will I really be getting around that 27y amount of distance or do I need to partial power the swing to try to get about 1/4 the distance this 58 degree wedge is actually capable of?

In short - is that aiming point setting power for this wedge shot, as it does on the green for the putter?

Or is the aiming point just for reference/aiming and to scope out elevation changes for the non-putter clubs?

    Thank you!
There are a few mysteries in how it works so I'm not certain, but here's my take:

You'll always be set w/ a default club for the shot pre-adjusted by the game to the exact yardage. It's then up to you to move closer/farther to offset lie/wind/rough/etc. So in your example at Sawgrass, you had 177 actual distance. If it was flat, no wind, and you hit a normal full shot, the ball will go approx 177, but of course there are green slopes etc to impact the final outcome. If in this same example the shot was up 20 feet in elevation, you would need to stretch that out to about 181y, so just use the D key to do that. If it was up in elevation 40 feet, you might need to change to a 5i, and adjust it DOWN to 185, for example.

Short shots like chip shots in particular require a shorter controlled backswing length. When you have for example a 12y chip shot from just off the green, the default presentation will be at 12y usually, and you will have to abbreviate the backswing greatly on this. The easy workaround happens when you chose 'flop shot'. For only this type of shot it seems you can just dial in the distance you're after, then take a normal full shot and all will be fine provided the swing is fine. This IS NOT true for chip shots shapes you must control the backswing on those. I'm not sure about pitch shots yet.

@NCP: Great stuff - Thank you..

What I can't figure out is why the distance you get set up with isn't the full club length?

Like on a 5I or something, the initial default set up is usually a few/many yards short of what you can stretch it out to with the D-Pad.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this even on shots not going to the pin, so I'm not sure why they are pre-adjusting the distance to something short of "100% of what the club can do" when I'm just hitting to further down the fairway, etc..

Any idea why or what they are thinking with that?
Is it riskier to try to get full club length in the eyes of the game/swing challenge?

It's mystifying to me - especially since they bothered to explain any of this exactly "nowhere" in documentation or online...

Think of it as your caddie is handing you what club he thinks you might hit and lets you know what the yardage is to the hole. It's helpful in H2H where you have a timer that you must complete the hole within else automatic double bogey is assigned.

          Got it - thank you!

As a side note, do you prefer the gameplay in Rory or TW2014?
(all graphics issues & content aside I mean)

As I switch back and forth, I think I might be having more fun in TW2014 still.
You have any comments after all your experience with, I assume, both?

TW14 is by far the better Simulation experience IMO.

I'm rapidly coming to that conclusion also..

I'm still blown away by Frostbite and the Rory graphics, but the gameplay does seem superior to me in TW2014

(and obviously the content/modes/rest of it is superior also)

I really like the way the swing feels/works more on TW. The strike meter is really cool and the longer stroke of the PS3 controller & swing is much more comfortable and enjoyable to me.

I bought two versions of TW since 2004 and they were so inferior I stopped looking and played TW2004 for 13 years or so. Mouse Tru-Swing was fabulous, and I doubt you can improve on it w/ a console controller and what it offers. The courses and the ani's were very good for 2003. Subsequent releases looked more and more cartoonish to me. I find w/ RM game play is excellent as both a TV golf event simulation, and as a playing simulation. My brother and I have matches going playing our own full season and so far I find it's been a fabulous simulation of the idiosyncrasies of RLG for us, and both of us are quite skilled w/ TW2004. We're not experienced as much w/ an xbox controller w/ joystick, but we're shooting between -4 and -12 depending on course and conditions. Some courses really present challenge especially on the greens. I'm an avid RLG as well playing to a 6 handicap at age 65y playing once a week w/o practicing, and this after a 3y layoff. I'm a PGA tour player fan as well, and for both of these RM hits the mark amply. Yes, it's a bit limited in content, but amply satisfying for me and my playing partner. We adjust conditions accordingly to keep the challenge up. I'm just barely getting brave enough to work the ball w/ the diagonal swing required, and at this point I will only risk it when I have to. We've had some fantastic matches thus far and expect more of the same going forward. I just started career mode and like it so far, but mostly it's playing H2H w/ my brother.

I've looked at good quality youtube videos of TW2014 and I would not want to give back the entire visual package you get w/ RM, and I love Nobilo's commentary. We had a most lovely match at gorgeous Quail Hollow, then this evening we played the WGC - Mexico at Wolf Creek. Since H2H restricts time per hole per player we left conditions very benign, light winds, no gusts, Saturday pins, w/ tournament conditions otherwise, because it takes considerable time on several holes to decide how to hit your T shots and approach shots, and the greens aren't easy to putt. I shot -8 w/ a holed eagle at 107y. Amp up winds there and you will be lucky to shoot -5 or -6 in H2H. The time factor in H2H absolutely comes into play. i love the variety of courses in RM, even though some favorites are missing. If I could do mouse Tru-Swing that would be the big icing on the cake. You definitely feel most attached w/ that swing method I feel over JS driven swing. But the latter works and is giving us sufficient challenge. Sometimes the swing just goes, from that brief inattention, just like in RLG. The motions required w/ the little JS are sufficiently sensitive to nerves just as nerves come into play in RLG one loses tight contact with what is required to always perform perfectly. We have committed to avoiding any antics that would make the swing too easy, and I have come up w/ one already, but that is not the point, to cheat the experience by finding a vulnerability to exploit. We free-hand the JS and this presents challenge for us for sure.

On a 4K w/ HDR TV RM is really sweet looking and this adds immensely to the immersion factor.

I wish I enjoyed the RM swing as much...

Beyond that I mainly wish they hadn't given up on the game.
So many more gorgeous courses would be AMAZING in RM.

                    Such a tremendous shame

Yep I agree. Even though it's apparently shelved you can't be sure they won't pick it back up again even if it's 4y from now as computing power and coding continue in some fashion to improve in lock step w/ Moore's law (as long as you consider both hardware and software we're still on queue IMO). For now, we should be massively grateful these folks have provided this amazing work for literally a few dollars a pop. Hours and hours of entertainment--I really love it!

did EA pull this from the psn store?

was looking to grab it again to play sawgrass a few rounds on the cheap and cannot find it.

Interesting - It does appear to have been pulled!

The "buy download" button takes you to an "Unable to find this page" landing spot.

Maybe a server issue too though..

Probably just to accelerate the process of getting to the "turn off the servers" stage.

If Divot's on point, which I'm positive he is, they have completely pulled out of anything golf related, present or future and they just want to get to the finish line of turning off any money outlay to support a dead past (the servers).

It looks like you can still buy it for Xbox though..
                                Maybe just a Sony issue?
Or maybe the change hasn't propagated to MS side yet..
