Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year
The problem EA has is that every single preview or discussion of their new game is going to bring up Rory, since it's their last effort. Just due to the nature of things, people will be reminded of Rory at every turn when it comes to coverage of their new game. I'm sure the question, "How will you learn from Rory's mistakes?" or something similar will be asked dozens of times.
And when Rory was released, there was promise of "more to come" in terms of content. They actually never closed the door on even Augusta coming back...https://www.eurogamer.net/ea-rory-mc...ts-the-masters
And while they did provide a few more courses and things, they pulled the plug and left the game with just 13 total real-life courses in it at the end of things, and it took almost a year to get it to that count; Banff Springs was the final one, and that was made available in May of 2016.
Again, Rory wasn't "bad" when all things were said and done, but I am also looking at it through the lens of playing just $12 for it.
Ehh, I don’t think so. I have not seen any of the Rory 15 negativity in any articles over the past year. I think more focus will be on how it has The Masters.

"Woods was the headliner of EA's golf franchise for years before the it switched to Rory McIlroy for its 2015 title, meaning the new game will end an eight year hiatus when it launches next year.
In our 5/10 review of the 2015 release, IGN said: "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is a disappointing golf game that just barely manages to make the cut.""
I'm not saying it's gonna be a huge focus or anything, but it's definitely going to come up and be a discussion point.Orbis Non SuficitComment

I think some of us are showing our age and longevity in this space by talking about Rory so much.
These companies are always looking for growth and getting younger demographics involved. I think that's been a huge part of the 2k21 success and I'm sure EA has sights on grabbing some of it.
I agree with Volt -- when PGA 2023 comes out, the Rory comparisons or discussion from how that went simply isn't going to matter.
Us here, we might be thinking about it and talking about it -- but for the vast majority of gamers out there, an effort from 8 years in the past that didn't work out just doesn't mean anything really.
Mistakes happen for every company. We really need to move on and stop bagging on EA about how that went. It's just not relevant anymore.Comment

No doubt it’s a black eye on the series. I just think once the screenshots of Amen corner start rolling out , not many people will care about it.
Just my 2 cents .

And yes, I do remember when EA tried to act like maybe Augusta would be added post launch.
Not having Augusta and Tiger was a huge blow to that game. Throw in 8 real world courses at launch and it didn’t have any chance.
Probably should have been delayed to 2016 looking back.

When people write reviews of EA Sports PGA Tour next spring, the comparisons are going to look at 2K's game (assuming it is out before EA's), as well as the last EA Sports golf game that came out, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour. I, like everyone, hope that those comparisons are favorable for the new game, and that EA will have not made those same mistakes.
But the mistakes they made were critical and fatal...enough to the point they shut down a franchise that had been a steady one since the early '90s. And fans of that series (myself included) saw EA as ruining what was once an annual tradition of getting the new Tiger Woods/PGA Tour game by coming to market with a half-baked, flawed game that contained barely enough content for a demo, let alone a full-priced, AAA sports title.
It's hard to forget that, and people will be reminded of it as this new game gets closer to launch. The good news is that, essentially, EA has nowhere to go but up. And the inclusion of the majors and Augusta is a great starting point. But the albatross (golf pun intended) that is Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is hanging around EA's neck until they can show they're better than that.Last edited by MrArlingtonBeach; 05-18-2022, 12:52 PM.Orbis Non SuficitComment

See, I completely disagree with that. How is it not relevant? What else does EA have to show in the golf video game space in the last 7-8 years?

EA has already addressed a lot of those issues, they’ve confirmed s new swing mechanic, which was lackluster in Rory 15. They have confirmed the most important course , Augusta National, among courses like Pebble Beach. Personally outside of Augusta I’m really looking forward to Kiawah Island. But anyways they have also confirmed a new create a player system. It was lackluster in Rory 15 if you recall.
The way EA moves past Rory 15 and it’s issues is simply by showing and telling how they have fixed and improved the problems. Which seems to be what they have done here and there over the past year. I think EA is serious about this game.
I believe the minute people see the improvements, even the biggest haters of Rory 15 will be on board.

The course list is the thing that is really appealing right now, I 100% agree with you on that. All the other stuff? It's a "wait and see" for me.Orbis Non SuficitComment

Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year
The flaw in your analysis, at least in my view, and please take no offense... is just assuming that "EA" is one monolith that never changes how they do things or that the people never change and that new people (or the same people) aren't hyper aware and cognizant of errors and missteps in the past.
Just isolating on golf..
Can we please give EA the majority benefit of all those great years of TW games before the rushed generational switch to Rory?
Folks talking about Rory are enormously over indexing on how that went and not giving nearly enough credence to all the efforts before it.
For me -- I think all those games are so far in the past that its' going to mean little (good or bad), but if they are pulling from the past, I really believe in my heart of hearts that they have many eyes on it who know just why and how things went bad and good in the 2010-2015 era of EA golf releases and they are going to aim for a nice of mash up of the good from each.
I really really REALLY don't believe an organization like EA is just going to roll out an updated version of a "failure" (Rory). They simply wouldn't be doing this if that was the concept here.Comment

Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year
Sorry -- lost the thread of my original point about none of it mattering to buyers, and I do think that's true.
We forget how often new and younger folks are rolling into the gaming market and those types of buyers simply don't care (or may not even be aware) of what happened 8-13 years ago.
It's a long time in gaming and tech stuff.
There's just no part of me that thinks someone analyzing EA 2023 is going to be excited at what they are seeing in previews and marketing...and then go "yeah but they had a failure of a golf game back in 2015, so I'm not buying their new game"
I mean - just look at all the other sports series, from all brands.
Year after year...after year...people buy all the franchises for their own reasons and mostly disregard bad stuff from literally just the previous year!
haha
I maintain that the Rory angle is relevant to us here because we are hyper obsessed with this space and many of us have been in it for 30 years now.
We are outliers.Comment

I think the average Joe will see Augusta on the cover, and immediately be very interested. He’s not going to think of how poor the 2015 game was.
I’ll say it…. AUGUSTA sales. 🤣 I think TW12 had a lot of interest simply because it was the first with Augusta , and I think EA is trying to replicate that excitement.
At the end of the day, it is up to every single person to make the choice. Some may very well say no to it because of a game from 2015. I just don’t think it will be many. UNLESS this game is so atrocious it’s Rory 15 with Augusta slapped on. Which i don’t see happening.

Re: It now seems logical we will get PGA Tour 2k23 this year
This is a "what have you done for me lately" industry, especially in the sports games side of things. EA has not been a player in the golf scene in years, because of self-inflicted wounds acquired during their last launch.
They came out of the gate with their new game, going straight into announcing Augusta. That's huge for them. They need that to compete. But all their promised fixes and updates, etc. are hollow promises until they show what they can do.
Meanwhile, 2K has a game in 2K21 that shows (whether you like it or not) that it can be successful and sell a ton of games. They didn't even need Tiger Woods or Frostbite or any of the majors to do that.
That's what I'm saying as far as why Rory still matters. The competition has released a game within 2 years that sold 2.5 million copies. EA has released nothing, and their last effort killed the franchise for 8 years.Last edited by MrArlingtonBeach; 05-18-2022, 01:38 PM.Orbis Non SuficitComment

Yes but keep in mind TW12 and 13 had Augusta, PGA 23 with include the first official Masters since literally 2013.
