Masters ratings up 41% from last year

Just how popular is Tiger Woods? Popular enough to boost the ratings a whole 3.0 points (3.17 million more households) and a 3% share increase.

The final round of the 2004 Masters saw Phil Mickelson finally get his first win at a major, but thanks to the absence of a certain Mr. Tiger Woods, it failed to attract big ratings. Woods won his fourth Masters green jacket on Sunday (April 10) and helped boost CBS' overnight 2005 Masters ratings by a whopping 41 percent. Sunday's final round, which saw Woods and Chris DiMarco go head-to-head for 18 holes and then into a sudden death playoff, did a 10.3 rating/21 share for CBS in metered market overnights. Those numbers were up significantly from 2004, when the final round did a 7.3/18.

Nice, but frankly, I've never been too impressed with most of the fans that tune in only for Tiger. Check out the ESPN golf boards to see what I'm talking about. Most of them are bandwagon Tiger fans who don't know the first thing about golf.

There's no denying that he raises the popularity of the sport.

That's really the only thing that matters. The more people who watch, play and enjoy the game, the better.

Tiger winning is definitely good for the sport.

Yeah it's great for the players because of the higher purses and increased golf coverage on TV but personally it's a real pain to have to call a week in advance to get a tee time and then go through a 6 hour round because you have all the Tiger wannabes out there screwing around and holding everybody else up. Not to mention courses jacking up green fees 50% in the last few years trying to cash in on golf's popularity. It's taken alot of enjoyment out of the game for me

If it ever takes you 6 hours to play a round of golf then your course is simply not doing its job. There should be marshalls on the course making sure that you are always on pace for a 4-hour round. Plus, you should either ask or be allowed to play through the group in front of you if they're holding you up.

Sorry to hear that you've lost enjoyment in the game though.

lol if those bandwagon fans dont have a clue of how the hell golf is played, why would they watch it. & yes ive even seen pics of tiger with his fiance on his vacation on msn. its incredible with the popularity of tiger, is it because of him slamming his club, or is it because of his dominance?

i bet most of the bandwagon fans look for tiger to wack his clubs around when he hits an errant shot, they like watching the steam coming out of one's ears or head.
