    F1 Challenge 99 - 02 or Grand Prix 4?

I have an older computer so I have a difficult time running some of the newer games and I don't have the bread to upgrade my machine at this time. Which of these 2 games do you guys prefer? I'm desperate for a modern F1 sim. I've heard mixed things about both of them. Who's got the edge in:

    1) driving model
    2) AI (I don't play online w/ my PC)

Any help would be appreciated. Thnx.

I don't have F1 Challenge 99-02 on my PC (I do have it on PS2), but I do have Grand Prix 4. I've always liked Geoff Crammonds racing games, and GP4 is the best of the bunch. Solid AI, lots of tuning options, nice looking tracks, and weather that varies along the length of the track. Plus it runs like a champ on my PC (P4 2.4, ATI 9800 Pro, 1280x1024, graphics turned all the way up). F1 99-02 is also pretty good from what I've heard, so hopefully someone else can chime in with their opinions on it.

F1 Challenge is quite a few years newer than GP4 so it will probably be a little more taxing on your system.

GP4 is not the better looking or handling of the two but it does have better AI imho. I also enjoyed the overall F1 weekend immersion and the damage in GP4.

F1C also has better physics and ff. It also looks prettier and the huge mod community behind it will keep it fresh when the newness wears off.

F1C has pretty crappy online play but that is better than none I guess - which is what I recall GP4 having. Either way, if you want online racing look elsewhere.

With FIA having sold F1 out to Sony console exclusivity you might have a hard time finding either of these two titles. There are a few other games out now that are pretty good and have a much better online component (if that is what you want). Most have demos so give them a try.

Live for Speed is a serious racing simulator. No arcade modes, no steering aids - YOU have to do the driving. Try the LFS physics with our free demo!

Pretty low specs and a free demo available. No licensed cars/tracks but the mod community backing this game already has a full f1 grid to download. Not a bad game at all and pretty smooth online. You can also just buy the game online so no trip to the store is needed.

GTR is not going to cure an F1 fix but it is built on the F1 Challenge game engine. Fully licensed and online racing with a big following. Little steeper specs than LFS but a great game. Try the demo on their download page.

Same as above only Legends version - coming in oct but the demo is out now.

This one just came out - I believe it is from the original developers of EA's F1 series (ISI). No demo yet.

There is a demo for rfactor. I suggest everyone check it out:

        Decent game.

I tried the rFactor demo, it's not bad. It's online only, but you can host your own game with a password and throw in some AI guys to test it out without pissing off other real people. Physics seemed pretty good, you really need to have a good setup and not over drive your car. Debating purchasing it.

GTR, well, it's my current favorite. I've been downloading tracks for it like a madman, have over 100 now, and counting (I'm going to throw them all on a DVD once I collect them all). I'm currently doing a race weekend at Mosport, and having a blast. (Coming down those sweeping downhill left-handers, including getting your wheels off the ground is exciting!)

Live for Speed was nice, but I'll have to check out the mods for it to see if I want to purchase it. The demo didn't really do it for me, but an F1 mod would certainly get my attention. Of course, I'm sure I'd like the faster cars in the full version over the ones in the demo. If the modders are making real world tracks for it that is a huge plus.

As you can see I am a track nut. The more real-world tracks the better (although I won't turn away a well done fantasy track.) If the modders are making tracks for LFS and RF, that would definitely lean me towards buying them.

I too am waitng on RF for more tracks and cars. Right now, GTR is the game I have been playing a lot of. RF has an awesome multiplayer set-up if that is your thing.

Thanks for all the input. I went ahead and bought EA's offering. There are just too many great mods out there. It's like getting a few dozen games in one.

Oh yeah... F1 99-02 is an excellent game. Especially with all the mods. Good choice.
