    NASCAR 06 setup tips

    Hi all:

Unlike NASCAR 2005, the stock setups for many tracks in NASCAR 06 are way off. No worries for me, as I like to tinker with setups. But I hate taking other people's setups off the Net and plugging them in, as some of them are ridiculously unrealistic (15 pound tire pressures!) or compensate for a driving style unlike mine.

During my travels around the Net to learn more about the physics of basic stock car setups, I stumbled upon a really detailed site with all sort of setup tips for all aspects of the car, chassis, transmission, tires, steering, etc. The site concluded with basic cures for various handling condtions.

I trimmed that long list to just the aspects of the car that can be tuned in NASCAR 06, which has a lousy setup model that doesn't allow for individual tire pressure adjustment or spring adjustment or shock adjustment, etc. So here are tips that apply to everything you can change in NASCAR 06. Hope they help:

    CAR FEELS UNSTABLE
    • Spoiler too low.
    • Tire psi. too low.
    CAR FEELS UNRESPONSIVE
    • Tire psi too low.
    • Springs too soft.
    CAR FEELS OVER RESPONSIVE
    • Tire psi too high.
    • Springs too stiff.
    CAR IS LOOSE ENTERING CORNER
    • Spoiler angle too low.
    • Front springs too weak.
    • Rear springs too stiff.
    • Wedge too low.
CAR IS LOOSE IN THE MIDDLE OF A CORNER
    • Wedge too low.
    • Spoiler too low.
CAR IS LOOSE EXITING A CORNER
    • Wedge too low.
    • Spoiler too low.
    • Front springs too weak.
    • Rear springs too stiff.
    CAR PUSHES ENTERING CORNER
    • Spoiler angle too high.
    • Front springs too stiff.
    • Rear springs too weak.
    • Wedge too high.
CAR IS TIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A CORNER
    • Wedge too high.
    • Spoiler too high.
    CAR PUSHES EXITING A CORNER
    • Wedge too high.
    • Spoiler too high.
    • Front springs too stiff.
    • Rear springs too soft.

I'm enjoying NASCAR 06 the more I play it. The online lobbies still suck and it's a bummer the game still only allows for four online racers in one event, but the racing is pretty damn competitive and fun with clean, serious racers.

    Take care,
    PK

Do you have a racing wheel? I was concerned in one of the reviews I read that said you won't be able to be successful at this game unless you have one...just wanted to know your thoughts, thanks.

I don't have a wheel, and you don't need one to be successful at this game. I win races without one.

Wow thanks PK. I've struggled on my setups at some of the tracks and this really helps. Thanks a lot.

I'm in the same boat as you at some tracks, Dave! I have no problems with the default Cup setups at the plate tracks and Bristol, but the others need some tweaks.

            Good luck!

I tell ya, I was really hoping you would say that. Thanks PK...I'm back out on the track now.

                Milbrew:

There's not a single console racing game where a wheel is mandatory for success. The games are designed to work with a controller. Yes, a wheel might help you be more precise, but you can win with a controller.

Hell, F355 for the Dreamcast was arguably the most demanding, precise console racing game ever in terms of driving model, and I used the good, old-fashioned Dreamcast controller for that game, too.

You'll do fine with the Xbox controller, man!
