I saw the eulogy too. I've never seen Dave so emotional. One of the classiest things I've seen in a long time. Wheldon was a class act after the race. Can't wait for the St. Petersburg in a few weeks.

RIP Paul Dana, and I agree with Wheldon being a class act.

I find myself intrigued with the safety of this issue. I wonder why he wasn't slowing down and hit that fast. I also wonder what the fatal injuries were, because I've seen a ton of shows on racing safety and it's amazing what they do to the cars nowadays to make them safe. I know death is a unavoidable risk, but hopefully they can learn from this. Sadly it sounds like driver error is a big culprit though.

It sucks whenever you lose someone in a sport, really brings things into perspective.

For Robin though there was a systems of checks and balances set in place to basically save him from himself.

That system was done in by the economic landscape of today's open wheel racing in both CHAMP CAR and the IRL. With a skinny grid and racing money tough to come by who can blame a owner for throwing in a self funded driver? I do not think that Robins piece was to insult Paul Dana and his family. It was to put a glaring spotlight on a very serious issue that is facing this sport. I myself find some irony in Paul's death that is tied to these merger talks.

Let's face it if a merger happened we would be looking at a very stout grid for a open wheel series. You could make a good argument that in a merged series the Paul Dana's of the world would be forced to spend a little more time in a feeder series before moving up.
I was going to post something originally that i didnt feel he should have been racing to begin with at this level, but took it out becuase of respect for his passing. I have seen a number of guys on the track that shouldnt be there that have caused more problems than I like to remember. Lets face it, we all know why had gotten the ride, but is that reason enough to let him race? I would never judge his wanting to race or his right to, but at what point do we look at the drivers and determine who is fit to drive and who is not? im not saying his death was related to his not being a good driver by any means, as many other factors could have contributed to it, but what checks and balances are in place at this level that determine if a driver is fit to put all the others lives in jeopardy? Ed Carpenter, while he is a nice kid, does not belong in the IRL IMO, as he could barely keep himself out of trouble driving with us. Are these divisions so hard up for drivers and teams that they would risk the lives of all others involved in doing so? I cant speak for the IRL, as I dont follow it as much as I used to, and im not sure what driving tests and cards they most possess these days. Our driver drove with Panther Racing testing a few years back aftr winning the USAC division, but nothing ever became of it (he was too old and doesnt have the "look"). All i know is we lost a driver, a family lost a loved one, and we are left with questions.

That's too bad, because Dave can wheel a race car with the best of them.

Just wanted to add my condonlences here as well. Paul was as dedicated driver as you'll meet. I was fortunate to know and work with him in his formative racing years. You'll be missed Paul.

Dan further showed why so many of us in racing like him last Sunday. Fast, personable and a class act.

                Cheers,

                Al.
