    DVD9 restricting PGR4?

So PGR4 has issues fitting on a DVD. They had to axe day/night cycles, because they didn't fit on the disc. Which has a few PGR fans feeling blue. Sony, though, Sony are happy. They're chirping like little baby birds at feeding time. Dave "Don't Hate On My Blu-Ray" Karraker:
We took a lot of heat at launch for including Blu-Ray in PS3. Now it looks like that investment is being justified. Next generation games simply need more space on the disc to contain all that high definition content. Take a look at Lair, for example, already pushing 25GB of content, and that is a first-generation title. At 50GB storage capacity, Blu-Ray gives the PS3 plenty of headroom for developers to fully realize their visions well into the future.
You can bet that if each of those words were a finger covered in sugar he'd have licked, sucked and kissed each one as they came out. That's how sweet they would have sounded. Mmm mmm.

Not really a big deal but that extra space would have been nice.

But I think other than this, MS has a bigger problem with space and that is the Core console. Having a console with no HDD is a bigger restriction on developers.

    DVD9 isn't limiting the developers.

The developers are incredibly stupid in this case. It would make all of the sense for the world to change the lighting for day/night, just like every game on Xbox 360. It's either stupidity or laziness.

Don't know about that one... because of higher advances in data compression?

Every time you compress something that equals in higher loading times and other problems. Developers spend more time trying to fit items in but if the space is already there, developers have time to focus on other aspects of the game instead of cramming data together.

Well, in this case... they tried to make two different textures for two different times of day, when common sense says to change the lighting, which doesn't take up nearly as much as another HD texture. That's really what I meant.

Basically it's less of a size issue as it is a developer issue. So Sony doesn't really have a case here... but they'll milk it because they don't have sales and they'll do anything to get sales.

Someday we will see game ads throwing mud at other systems/games. Like politics. Fantastic. I like the way we're going.

It's still a game the ps3 wishes it had.

Maybe MS can offer night PGR DLC packs for people with HDD's. I'll agree with the thought that they could have spent more time with getting the lighting down right instead of doubling every texture in the game. They knew how much space they had, and kinda wasted time and effort.

the "smaller" Mass Effect will probably destroy the gigantic 25 gigs of Lair in gameplay. It's laughable to think disk size is everything. Only a console with no games points this out. MS should have never made the core, and then this would never have even been able to be brought up as an issue.

I could honestly care less about the times of day, since the different types of weather bring a different lighting setting. I would love Bizarre Creations to explain how they create the cities though.

                    Good read, thanks!

                    Glad that is cleared up.

Considering how GT5 is shaping up, I don't think that Sony cares.

GT5 is irrelevant until its TBA 2008 release date. PGR4 comes out in early september, along with a flood of other great 360 games this fall. I bought my game console to play games, not wait for games and gawk over still photos.

GT5 has no damage model which means bumper cars 5. I prefer a sim to arcade games like GT5.
