    Race 07 Multiplayer Demo Out

The guys over at SimBin have released the multiplayer demo of Race 07.

Meet other fans of car racing games and get to know everything about your favorite car racing games from our blog posts.

You may know SimBin, who put out the original Race WTCC game, as well at the GTR series. I'm surprised this racing game hasn't gotten more of a mention on these boards.

Anyone else playing the demo, or planning on picking this up on release?

I’ll probably pick it up, I have all the other SimBin titles. The addition of the Radicals and F3000 is pretty nice for RACE.

RACE 07 was a disappointment to me. I much prefer SimBin's GTR 2, which has a ton of great mods, too.

Just something about the driving model in RACE 07 didn't feel right to me, especially compared to the brilliant GTR 2.

          Take care,

R07 is a decent game imo. Still too much like the previous SimBin titles for me. Easy to reach a certain limit.

Good yes, brilliant no. Too many issues with tires to be brilliant.

What kinds of issues? Wear rates? Grip models? I'm curious.

Both of what you named plus temperature modeling are the big three issues imo. It's way too easy to throw the cars around like they are toys, without a penalty. Even if one of the three was a little better, it'd make things a little more even.

The wear rates really aren't terrible overall, it's the fact that you can slide around like crazy, and the tires don't take much abuse. There is too much lateral grip imo. Things like being able to run extreme caster, camber, and toe settings that you wouldn't come close to in a real car fall into play here. As for the temps, something like a spin and locking up the brakes that would absolutely fry the tires, doesn't do it. You can spin, lock it down, and drive away without any issue. That also comes back on the wear rates and somewhat on the grip models.

I should also mention the setup aspect of the sim. You can use dang near the same setup on any track, with only two or three changes. I've got a base setup for the RSR that I use for the stock SimBin tracks, the only thing I ever change is the gearing. Well I take that back. I do change the brake bias, but that's a corner to corner thing anyways so it changes on track, not in the garage.

Not sure if you use it or even know what it is, but I've got a couple top 10 times on GTR2 rank. Doesn't apply to the topic at hand, just trying to give you an idea that I do know my way around the game.

Re: Race 07 Multiplayer Demo Out

Interesting points, and I agree. Simbin probably used this tire model because of complaints that the handling model in GTR was too tough.

So Simbin appears to have sold its soul a bit for more accessibility and higher sales. Successful strategy, as GTR 2 sold a lot of copies.

I can't blame them, I guess. GTR 2 still is a very good sim, and it's solid for racing online because the driving model is easier than GTR. It allows the decent-to-average player to concentrate more on racing instead of just keeping their car on the track.

And for those who really want a heavy kick in the balls, there's always Grand Prix Legends still around for the ultimate PC sim driving/racing test. GPL is unforgiving in its realism, as I'm sure you know. Such a fun game -- an all-time classic.

I agree with you there. I've been racing it since it came out, and still am enjoying it, even despite it's "faults". I really love the game, I just wish there were some things that were slightly different. Like you said, can't blame them for doing it, as the game is extremely popular.

I love GPL, I just wish I had the time to devote to it. One of my sim-racing team members, (www.swedishamericanracers.com) drove GPL for about 8 years. Needless to say, thanks to that, he's fast no matter what sim he drives.

Yes, I threw a shameless plug in for my team. Don't laugh at the website too much, we're still working on it.

                      It's a nice site! I like the Absolut 911 GT3.

Thanks PK. My team manager pained that one up, as I have no idea how to do that kind of thing. I'll pass your kind words along to him.
