The High Groove - Sim Racing Needs More Teamwork

One of the most overlooked aspects of simulation racing games is the absence of teamwork in the game. Terry Crouch checks in this week with his weekly column, The High Groove, to take a look at why sim-racing racing needs more teamwork.

"Practice should entail a dry run at a track type with a neutral car setup. F1CE has a form of this already with the Race Car Evolution stages, but you can carry it so much further. After a series of laps, the virtual crew chief would step in with a series of questions about the condition of the car, rather than a simple “choose A or B” option. Is it too tight? Too loose? If it’s either of those conditions, is it upon corner entry or exit? Is it just loose overall? The virtual crew chief can then make setup changes based on the driver’s responses to these questions. Setup changes are rather simple values adjusted in a numeric table, so it’s definitely within the realm of possibility."

    Great article.

I know it probably wouldn't go too much for the casual racing sim fan, but for a hardcore fan it would be nice to incorporate multiple people on one racing team, for example you could have a driver, a spotter, and crew chief. I'm not the best handling the cars, but I'm pretty good at setups, so I would love to be a crew chief and make setups and then watch someone talented dominate with them.

Great article. Though I doubt EA would ever do something like this, simply because it only appeals to a certain percentage of their consumers and most likely a small percentage.

Hopefully someone else does though, it would increase the fun factor and re-play ability of a Nascar game greatly.

Great article. This article is mainly Nascar based, but much of the ideas can work in other forms of racing. I guess we will have to wait until a adventurous developer steps up to the plate.

Great article as always by Tcrouch. I would love to have a virtual crew chief to get some other input besides mine. During practice would be great in order to get the car setup; changes or suggestions.

Great article.I believe that Sony was heading in that direction with F1 CE if they would have paid greedy Bernie to keep the license, I think that they would have put out the best F1 game on console or pc.

Yeah, I agree. It took a lot of study before I actually knew what you needed in a setup. There's still a lot of people that don't. They just download someone's random setup that's just 'hey this is a fast setup" without any idea if it fits their driving or not.

It would be a great boon to new sims coming out if they had a virtual crew chief.

Oh, and as far as the the new Codemaster's F1 game, based on what they did with GRID, I do have high hopes for it, not in just the purely simulation of F1, but the other options like you said.

I forgot to add somethings in my last post. EA is ruining the NASCAR series in my opinion. they spend so much more time making the NFL Madden games and crap and just putting NASCAR out there just to make money. Somebody else should really try and get the NASCAR titles. Like the guys who make the Race Driver Series. Those games are so friggin amazing its unbelievable.
