Tony Stewart granted release from JGR

    http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar...ory?id=3479199

Not much of a surprise. Going to be weird seeing not seeing Tony in the 20 car.

Seems that once guys reach that mid 30 range they become expendable. Too bad... Tony is probably top 5 in terms of talent in all of NASCAR.

I'm pretty sure that was Tony's decision and JGR wanted to keep him so I don't see the "guys become expendable" thing.

Becoming the highest paid driver on the circuit would influence his decision, I'm sure. As a guy nears the end of his career, he starts looking ahead to his life after racing. If he wants to continue as an owner, why not start the team while he has the ability to build the foundation?

With Hendrick chassis and motors and Ryan Newman as the second driver, I doubt they'll be as bad off as Waltrip and others have been...

Fair enough, I didn't read the article and assumed that JGR had showed him the door. My bad.

I get very defensive when I see some of the 'old schol' drivers being replaced by 21yr. old kids.

              This will be a disaster.

Anytime you take on two roles, it means you can't do either of them well. If Stewart is just talking putting up some money, and having someone else run the operation that's one thing. But if he expects to do everything an owner has to do AND be a top class driver? He's setting him set up for failure. It's just not possible to do both.

Look at the NFL, and when there was a time people wanted to be both the GM and head coach. The idea of "if I have to cook the dinner, I should be able to buy the groceries". Never worked out well for any of them. It's just too much to do, and completely different skillsets to do them.

He could do similar to JR. and be fine. JR. seems to do ok...

                  So does Jeff Gordon.

There's been rumors pretty much since the beginning of the year that Stewart didn't know what he wanted to do in the future. Those rumors only intensified when the Haas-CNC opportunity presented itself. JGR has always made it clear through it all that it was Tony's decision to make but that they would like to keep him. They granted him is release because the Haas-CNC thing was for next year, even though his contract covered 09 as well.

Apples to oranges. As a team owner in NASCAR, you get the people in place and you're dealing with a machine. Get the right equipment, the people who know how to operate it, and a good driver. You can't compare that to the NFL, where you have day-to-day interactions with planning a gameplan, scouting the other team, watching film, making gameplan tweaks, etc.

In racing you have a lot of testing and study, but as an owner, you get the right people in place and let them do their jobs. Most of being a successful owner is built on your relationships, and who you know. If you can acquire good equipment and know the right people, your success rate is much higher. I guarantee you plenty of people in the garage area respect Stewart. He'll do just fine in getting people in the right spots, and he's already got the good driver part licked.

I don't think he'll be a Champion this next season or anything, but a disaster? That would be a huge shock.

Need to keep in mind that Tony is only buying in for 50%. He won't be the only owner, and things get much easier when you have someone else there with you.

I think Tony just wanted to wash the Toyota stench off him and get back to his chevy's!

I think this was one of his reasons for leaving, Toyota car has not been nice to Stewart this year.

2009 may be rough for him and the team but 2010 I could see him having it all together with a good team backing

I agree. I don't seem him failing in this. He knows too many people, has too much talent, and has put a lot of thought and planning into this.
