Please forgive the total NASCAR noob-ness...

    Hey guys,
I've just recently started getting into NASCAR. For years, I simply didn't understand the appeal and then one day, it dawned on me that I needed to uncover the reason for its massive appeal with millions of people, many of whom also loved the same sports that I love. So, a while ago I began investigating. And as with all my sports that I love watching, the enjoyment on television crossed paths with my love for their video game counterpart. Now, here's the maive noob questions:
    - How often should the average pit stop happen. Or is this one of those questions that has too many variables to be answered so plainly?
    - What exactly are the prevailing strategies? Gun it all the time and pass whoever you can? Keep the speed moderate until you need to pass people? I know it's not like Formula 1 which is constant stopping and starting.
    - What causes you to get a yellow flag? I drive too aggressively in the game and I get yellows seemingly all the time.

I understand sports, so trust me, I get it if these questions are simply too broad to answer succinctly. Just thought maybe someone might have some thoughts I could learn from.

    Thanks guys! Enjoy the 500.

3: in real life the yellow come out when their is debris on the track, or a car spins or crashes in front of other drivers. oh yeah ... rain too.

1: pit stops depend on the track .... it mostly has to do with tire wear. there are some tracks where you want tires ten laps in and others where they will last until you run out of fuel.

        tinpan, here's a good link to start with: NASCAR 101 - http://www.nascar.com/kyn/nascar_101/

(Sorry, you might have to copy and paste. I didn't have controls for making an active hyperlink.)

Also, I recommend the book NASCAR for Dummies. I'm a NASCAR neophyte, and I still refer to that book all the time.

        A few things I've gleened...

        1. A typical, full pit stop lasts between 13-15 seconds. I say "full," because sometimes drivers come in just for tire changes on one side. Those stops will take considerably less time.

        2. Strategies differ from track to track. The way you race at, for example, a long track like Daytona or Talladega will be totally different than how you race in Bristol.
