    Gordon could help F1?

Should Ralf be watching over his shoulder?

The article is about Jeff Gordon helping F1, which has me excited but I'm not getting my hopes up. I think we will see Valentino Rossi in F1 before Gordon.

    Re: Gordon could help F1?

Fun read, but this guy is high.

Last time I checked, Ralf Schumacher has more victories this season than Montoya. Williams-BMW is just a few points behind Ferrari in the Constructors' standings. There's no question the team has the strongest driver lineup in F1 this year since Barrichello is inconsistent for Ferrari and since Raikkonen is making Coulthard look past it.

Gordon did a GREAT job during the demonstration. But finding the extra four seconds per lap that he'd need to be competitive in F1 is very, very difficult. F1 cars are way more difficult to drive than a Winston Cup car.

I think Gordon could do it, as he's a great race driver. But why would Williams fire someone who already knows how to do it -- Ralfie -- and also wins races? Don't forget that Williams' engine manufacturer and technical partner is BMW, a German company. I think they want a German in the car -- Ralf.

Williams also is having no trouble attracting non-tobacco sponsors with Ralf and JPM in the seats. Williams signed Compaq (now HP) a few years ago when almost every team relied on tobacco money. This year Williams signed a no-smoking patch company as a major sponsor and just last week announced Budweiser as a major sponsor. It doesn't need Gordon to attract money.

But a Gordon-Montoya tandem at Williams would be a massive boost for F1's profile in the U.S., one that I'm sure neither Bud nor HP would mind one bit. Plus Gordon and Montoya got on immediately when they first met that day at Indy. They really seemed to like each other.

I would love to see a Gordon-Montoya tandem at Williams. But I don't see it happening.

Plus Gordon makes ridiculous amounts of money in NASCAR through endorsements and souvenir sales. There's no way he would make that much money in those areas in F1. The trash-and-trinket biz surprisingly isn't nearly as sophisticated or developed as it is in NASCAR, especially for driver apparel and collectibles.

You'll see a ton of team stuff at races, especially Ferrari, but not nearly as much driver stuff. It's the opposite in NASCAR. You don't see people wearing nearly as much generic NASCAR or team stuff as you do driver apparel. And where do all the profits from those collectibles go? To the driver and his associates.

    Take care,

                Re: Gordon could help F1?

Yeah, he really does. 60+plus wins, four Winston Cup championships, two Daytona 500 wins, three Brickyard 400 wins. Yeah, he sucks.

You don't have to like him -- I don't -- but you must acknowledge that he's the best NASCAR driver of the last 10 years.
