    CART could fold next year

I'm somewhat surprised that no one mentioned this but then again most of the conversation seems to centre around NASCAR. Anyways yesterday I heard on the radio that the financial people at CART were doing some number crunching. It seems that the publicly traded racing series is now in such dire straits that there may not be enough funds to complete the 2004 racing schedule. They are thinking of trying to sell the company or at least sell large enough shares so that they can survive.

This is all very distressing from the canadian racing perspective as Canada's best drivrs are all in CART. There are 3 CART races in Canada that are so heavily supported it isn't funny. It's a shame that after the split with Tony George that CART has struggled so much. One wonders what will happen to the series and more importantly the drivers. I'm hopeful that Tony George will have enough sense to bring in the top CART racers with open arms and extend IRL to the 3 Canadian cities. (well at least Toronto because it's the oldest of the 3) Maybe if this happens and there isn't a viable open wheel option for Paul Tracy that he'll jump to NASCAR. He's expressed interest in going there and he DOESN'T want to go to F1. It would be cool to have a Canadian in NASCAR full time.

Funny that you say the reason that Tracy isn't in F1 is because he doesn't want to when in reality it's because he's not good enough.

Did Tracy ever beat Zanardi, Villeneuve, Montoya and da Matta -- all CART champions who went to F1 -- for a CART title? No. Did Tracy ever beat two-time CART champion de Ferran for a CART title before Gil went to the IRL? No.

Why? Because Paul Tracy never has won a CART title during his 10-plus-year career despite being in top equipment with Penske Racing and Team Green. That's all you need to know.

Paul Tracy is a talented racer and should win the CART title in a lark this year in top-shelf Forsythe equipment due to the lack of competition. But the guy isn't good enough and is too old to land a good F1 ride. Period.

Now, I understand as a Canadian, you're very defensive of The Thrill from West Hill. But just look at the guy's record: He's won races but never has been consistent or level-headed enough to win a title.

I'd really like to see US open wheel racing converge into one league again, I think having both CART and IRL isn't good for the sport. I don't know much about it, but that's just off the top of my head.

This is true PK I just made the Paul Tracy comment based on what he said in the Toronto media during the run up to the Indy. I agree with you for the most part but I think that this year he's been very consistent. It could be from lack of competition as you say but I think he's finally learned to calm down somewhat. Just look at the Indy where he destroyed the competition when the specs on all the cars are supposedly the same. It's mighty hard to win in such a dominating way with spec cars.

Nonetheless I've always liked Paul Tracy and he's a nice guy. I just hope for his sake that if indeed CART goes under that he'll find a home somewhere else.

I think natural evolution will cause one open-wheel series to be standing in the U.S. in the next few years, the IRL.
