Re: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Official Impressions Thread
I felt the demo was Burnout in the NFS world, came away disappointed. Sounds like the impressions are going that same way. Such a shame, but to be expected I guess based on Criterion.
Still weird that EA announced NFS Shift 2 today on the release of Hot Pursuit.Comment

Obviously..but it is made by Criterion and its purpose is a more arcade slant to the Need for Speed franchise.Comment

Yeah I get that it's Criterion, but why not just judge it on its own merits rather than holding it up to something it's not trying to be.I won't ask for Christmas or birthday gifts if you subscribe to the Operation Sports Newsletter (Not Just Another Roster Update). Re: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Official Impressions Thread
This game is supposed to be as arcade as Need for Speed has ever been and a complete 180 from Shift.
And coming from someone who is looking at the game from a Criterion perspective, I don't feel there is a sense of speed that their games have always had and I think it is noticeable that that the game is not running at 30 fps.
And aside from that, the single player has zero narrative and doesn't make you feel involved in the environment. In addition, the multiplayer is pretty cut and dry.
Where Criterion has put most of hte effort is in the Autolog...and being someone who doesn't get into beating friends and such, it doesn't add value to me.
Some people are going to love the Criterion twist on the franchise...some will hate it after Shift...I am just giving my opinion from someone who loved all of Criterion's previous efforts and wished Criterion would have gone all the way on the arcade slant and not try to cater to both sim/arcade fans and possibly not pleasing either.
I have given my opinion...I hope it will help others in possibly investing $35 when times are tight for many. I know it is OS style/culture for everyone who spends money to hype a game like crazy for two weeks...and I just won't do if it is warranted.
I made my point..hope it helps someone as I know there are many hardcore Criterion fans out there...and if anyone has any further questions, feel free to pm me and I will do my best to hope answer them. I won't revisit this thread.Comment

Re: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Official Impressions Thread
So far im liking the game offline. You can play as a racer or as a cop simultaneously. As you race or bust people you gain bounty. The more bounty you gain the more cars you can unlock. Certain cars are for racers only and certain cars are for cops only. As a cop the more bounty you gain the more weapons that are unlocked to you.
Havent gotten to play anyone online yet. But there are quick match lobbies with 3 different types of races.
1. Hot Pursuit - Racers need to get to the finish line before the cops stom them from getting there.
2. Interceptor - One on One. Racer vs Cop
3. Race - First to the finsh wins
There is the option to create a friends only match. You can choose all 3 race types as well. In hot pursuit you are randomly selected to be a cop or a racer along with every other racer.
The graphics and handling feel about the same as the demo. Ive been getting logged out of EA's servers twice within an hour. Hope this doesnt continue.PSN: buckeye02Comment

Re: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Official Impressions Thread
That doesn't make any sense. Criterion has made their racing games a particular way...just like Infinity Ward, Tiburon, or any other well known company.
This game is supposed to be as arcade as Need for Speed has ever been and a complete 180 from Shift.

However, I will at least say as someone who played the crap out of the last Burnout online, I can already assume we won't see eye to eye as I am mostly an online guy when it comes to Criterion now.I won't ask for Christmas or birthday gifts if you subscribe to the Operation Sports Newsletter (Not Just Another Roster Update). Re: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Official Impressions Thread
Only played it for a few hours and unlocked a few cars, 1st race I won drove the short cut the whole way then NOS to the finish line. Unlocked the Mazda MX8. I love the graphics and the concept, had some sound issues where when racing the music was almost muffled over the background noise, even the engine wasn't as loud as most Need for Speed games.
It just doesn't feel or seem like a real NFS game, only being able to do online and Career really sucks, no regular race mode sucks, I'd like to just race normal races. Having free roam is nothing more than Burnout and then later racing!
So far it's average at best, nothing really special, having the NFS Shift 2 trailer in the beginning of load up was a nice touch. I loved the first one can't wait for part 2.
But this NFS game just see so bland, like it was just thrown in for the cops and name sake. From what the original posters were saying in the beginning, it's obvious now they never had the game. Saying this game is so great and awesome, etc.
The graphics are average, Shift and other NFS titles had better graphics, environments have more details than the cars.
I will post pics and I got a video uploading to Youtube as we speak, but so far I'm not too impressed but will spend more time and unlock more before I just straight up knock it completely.
And this is coming from a guy who owns every NFS game period on PS2, PSP Xbox and Xbox 360 and PC.
And here is visual proof that I own the game, not the demo!!!

Re: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Official Impressions Thread
I really enjoyed the game so far....I dont nit pick too much. Overall it is a fun experience. The cars are very forgiving and easy to drive. I turned the music off....I like hearing the engine sounds and sound effect.
Solid racing game. Yeah that Shift 2: Unleashed trailer was insane!Comment

Re: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: Official Impressions Thread
yeah, this is what disappoints me the most. Free drive in Burnout Paradise was perfect with the billboard and gate smashes, and then you throw in random encounters with unlockable cars, it was great. The free drive on this doesn't seem to offer that much, but I only briefly played in it, I mainly just jumped from event to event.
