Too Old for Sim Racing? (Try 70yrs old)

You are too old for that!

    Out of my way rook!

Have you ever thought to yourself... I'm too old for this now? This whole sim racing thing is just for kids, right? Apparently, some 60 and 70 year old guys don't!

I came across a thread over at GT Planet that came as a pleasant surprise. There is an older crowd of avid GT 5 gear heads that love their virtual cars and racing! They seem to be into most console racing titles and love every minute of it! You have to admire the stay young at heart mentality.

I would love to turn some laps with my Pops (60yrs old) and be able to brag about it but that ain't going to happen anytime soon. You see, most folks from that were born in the 40's and 50's era grew up pre-tech era. They didn't have Atari, Nintendo or Sega. They played outside, rode bikes, battled it out on sand lots and raced their go-karts. Technology was an alien thing that was introduced to them in their mid 30s. Most don't know how to set up a DVR repeat recording, let alone connect a PS3 to the big screen and fire up an online race and don't care to. But why?

    Really? I don't think so!

Let's be honest, whether we accept it or not, there is a negative stigma that comes with being a gamer. Most folks view it as a thing only kids and teens do. Also, in my experience, the older crowd would rather head to race than participate in a virtual one. They would prefer to watch a race and cheer for their favorite manufacturer or driver than control a virtual car.

    Again, why?

My guess is that it's too darn complex for them! Unless you were brought up in the technology era or embraced it in your later years, you'll find yourself overwhelmed with the set up requirements. I tried to explain to my father-in law how he and I can battle it out online on MLB The Show now that he has a PS3. (He challenges me and we play the darn thing every time I'm there visiting.) But he feels paralyzed when I say online match.

Then there's this little thing called priorities... Even now, as I get older I see my priorities shifting. In fact, once I hit college, got married and had kids, priorities shifted in a hurry. Because of that "I ain't as good as I once was."

I'm trying to stay young at heart but it's hard. That's why I have to admire these older gents for their resiliency to stay young and have fun!

Ever wondered what a 62 year old man
would look like in front of a 360, wonder no more!

I'm going to be 51 at the end of January. I've got people on my XBL friends list from ages 21 to 72 most are 35 and up. Funny all of my real life everyday friends are not into video games. They think I'm nuts for investing the money I do on this hobby.
