rule changes for competition OR dominant drivers?

I was watching Dave DeSpain's show on SPEED channel last night and an e-mailer asked him if he'd rather see the major racing bodies institute rule and points changes to encourage more competition in the various racing leagues or put up with the occasional dominant driver for a stretch (Earnhardt, Shumacher, Andretti) So I ask you guys that question.

My personal opinion is that it's always a privelige to see greats in any sport, even auto racing. Yes sometimes it might be boring to see one driver dominating the scene for a few yrs but there's always going to be a time when there isn't somebody totally dominating the circuit and there is lots of competition.

It would really suck that drivers who are head and shoulders above others would have to be restricted due to rules and stuff like that. It's also a bit of an artificial feeling to have rules change for the sake of competition.

    TO:

    Agreed.

The greatest irony is that the series that uses the points system that's supposed to create the most exciting championship race -- NASCAR Winston Cup -- has the most boring championship chase, by far. Matt Kenseth leads by 418 points -- a gap of more than two races.

I just don't understand a points system in which a guy who might win one race all season -- Kenseth -- will obliterate a guy who may win seven or eight by the end of the season -- Ryan Newman. I'm all for consistency, but winning needs to be rewarded more in Winston Cup.

Props to Kenseth, but he's in total points collecting mode now, sapping any remaining life out of the championship chase. In F1 and the IRL, the title contenders have to go for the win now or someone will sweep past them in the points if they go into cash-and-carry mode.

    Take care,
