Anyone have Colin Mcrae 4 yet?

At $20, it seems like picking up CM4 is a no brainer, but does anyone have this one yet? Any reactions?

Re: Anyone have Colin Mcrae 4 yet?

    Picked it up last night.

    Graphics
Won't beat down any Xbox exclusive racers but they look a step up from last year. Far less shimmer, brighter less faded color and a few better textures here and there.

    Physics
Less twitchy on the stick than CMR3 and less grippy. Maybe it feels less grippy this year because there are a lot more surface types but at first I thought it felt a little dumbed down even from the demo like they are trying to make if feel like RSC. The physics feel very good overall but I noticed they don't model the car movement from 3rd person very well so sometimes it looks a little out of synch.

    Damage
They have added an advanced mode which ups the anti for damage. Now you can actaully damage your car to the extent it is not 100% repairable at service areas. It also lets you pick what gets repaired and what does't unlike CMR3 which just has your team decide. Damage seems to also occure to some extent more just from driving hard and hitting big air. Damage will also affect performance but since you only go two stages between service you still have to bang it up pretty hard before the stearing or gears start acting up. There is also a locked mode called 'expert' which I am hopign will be even more harsh.

    Gameplay
Far better sequal to CMR2 than three was. Now 2 players can pick any car and compete together in championship. Times are easily reviewable at the end of each stage so you know where you rank and how much time you need to gain or can give up. 6 stages over 6 or 8 countries with some countries also having SSS at the end. Tracks are fantastic this year although I've not seem to many countries yet. This year they have really nailed it so far. Good mix of narrow sections, tight roads bounded by ditches or trees, wide sections yet still bounded by mud or thick grass on the side, tight turns, blind turns and even a couple of big bumpy straights to wind the gears out on.

    Live
Only a high scores list but it is not done well. No seperation for car classes that I saw. Also if forces you to logon to Live form the menu and actaull 'post' your high scores from the memory - it is not automated instantaious posting during gameplay like PGR2 or MGP2. I see the way it is setup very open to cheating.

    Sound
Most of the engines sound pretty good but a few are whiney. Other than that you just hear some squeeks and thugs and rocks hitting the car but it is pretty decent. The english accent co-driver does a decent job with notes but still can't compare to hearing Nicky's voice next to you.

    Replay
A lot of the reviews talked that this was improved? Yes the camera track the car better and there are some sections that look like spectator cameras following the action but it is still far from perfect. No saving, no editing, no ff/rw and no tv heli-cam (which V-Rally 3 spoiled me on).

    Overall
At first I was a little disappointed because I had very high hopes for this title - probably too high. But after letting myself get into it is was really fun and the actual championship experience is so much better than in the past Colin's. For $20 this game is a steal. It isn't as slick or polished as an EA, Ubisoft or MS title but what Colin game has been? Overall I would have paid $30 for this game and been happy.

I agree with just about everything you said. It definitely is worth the 20 bones. Best 20 I've spent on gaming in years.

Re: Anyone have Colin Mcrae 4 yet?

I purchased CMR 04 Thursday night and played it for about 40 minutes. Played it again last night for about 40 minutes.

In summary, it is the best $20 gaming purchase I'll make this year. I'll lick molten asphalt if I find a better new game for 20 bones this year.

                      Initial likes and dislikes:

                      LIKES

-- The driving model is vastly improved over CMR 3. The "center pivot" handling seems to be gone. There's a lot more understeer and less broad-sliding in CMR 04 than in past CMR games. While some may decry that, I just read a story on WRC points leader Sebastian Loeb in Autosport in which Loeb's smooth style is much more suited for current WRC cars than the wild, broad-sliding style of Colin McRae. In other words, the lack of oversteer in CMR 04 is realistic.

-- Setup model. I really like how you can look at portions of each stage, and not just the whole stage, when setting up the car. I really helps make crucial decisions when dealing with "compromise" stages that have varying surfaces.

-- Graphics. I can't believe people are saying that CMR 3 has better graphics than CMR 04. CMR 04 is better, at least on the Xbox. The number of details is much greater than CMR 3. For example, the accumulated dust, snow or mud on the windshield during a stage, swept away by the wipers, the lack of gloss on the car after a dirty stage, the precision of the damage model, the on-screen interface -- it's all better than CMR 3. The precision damage model is really cool. I slammed a roadside post in a UK stage last night, and it was my only big hit. Sure enough, there was a post-sized indentation in my front bumper at the end of the stage exactly where I hit it. I think people are spoiled by the graphics of Rallisport Challenge and the upcoming Rallisport 2. Those graphics are among the best on the Xbox, period. It's unrealistic to think the Codies, who always have emphasized gameplay first, would make one of the prettiest games -- not just driving games, but games, period -- for the Xbox.

-- More precision in the driving model. I think CMR 04 requires a lot more precision than CMR 3. You need to control your speed a lot more since the built-in understeer prevents you from just pivoting and easily sliding through a turn, which you could do in CMR 3.

-- Setup changes make a big difference. I raced a few stages with default setups and then went in and tweaked the car properly. I was much faster and found I could dial in more oversteer, which I like in a rally car.

-- Can use any car in stages or championship. Hallelujah!

-- Heavy damage mode. Very realistic.

-- Ghosts. Big fun to race against your own ghost. Keeps the challenge of the game fresh. But I wish I could race against Friends' ghosts on XBL like PGR 2.

-- 2WD and Group B cars. I enjoy taking the slower, 2WD cars out, as they behave much differently than the 4WD WRC cars. And I can't wait to unlock the Group B cars. For those who think the 4WD WRC cars are easy to drive, get your hands on some Group B monsters. They are beasts on the stages.

-- Xbox Live scoreboards. Fun to compare times with the world and Friends on XBL. But see dislikes below for more comments on scoreboards.

                      DISLIKES

-- Lack of acceleration from the start line. There isn't enough punch off the line with the cars in this game. CMR 2.0 nailed that aspect of rallying perfectly. Anyone who rides in a rally car immediately notices the incredble acceleration of the car when it's on the proper tires and the differentials are dialed in properly. CMR 04 lacks that frightening acceleration. I did feel some really good punch off the line in a Finnish stage last night after making setup tweaks, but that same zip isn't felt off the line on other surfaces despite tweaks. Not a biggie, as the cars have proper punch exiting corners, especially when you set the gearing properly.

-- No differential tweaks. Man, I'd love to tweak the diffs to my heart's content. But I realize that I'm a hardcore rally freak, and the Codies had to strike a balance between realism and accessibility.

-- Unsure of effect of damage model on handling. I creamed my car against a few trees in one stage last night on purpose, trying to determine how much damage affects the handling model. The car felt a little tougher to drive, but I think it should have been more difficult considering the severity and location of my impact.

-- No Monte Carlo stages. It's the crown jewel of rallying. Why the hell is there no Monte or a fictitious French rally with Monte-like stages? Same with San Remo.

-- No rallycross that I could see. Is there rallycross in this game like there was with CMR 2.0? I prefer pure, against-the-clock rally, but it's nice to have the option to let it rip in some fun rallycross every once in a while.

-- Xbox Live scoreboards. While it's cool that the Codies added this feature to CMR 04, the implementation is very primitive. It simply lists the person's name and time, with no indication of what car the player used to set that time. PGR 2 has this feature with its scoreboards, and the Codies should have done the same for CMR 04. There's a BIG difference between the power of a Group B and WRC car and a similar difference between a WRC (4WD) and 2WD car. I'd like to know what car people used to set their best times. I would guess that the scoreboards simply will become a comparison of Group B times, as all of the quick times will be done with those monsters.

All in all, the Codies have returned the CMR series closer to its zenith, CMR 2.0. I still think CMR 2.0 is the best rally game ever, but this game is damn close to it in my early impressions.

If you want a damn good driving game and the most realistic rally game available for next-gen systems, you'd be nuts not to drop $20 on CMR 04.

I love CMR 04, and so does my wallet.

                      Take care,
                      PK

                        Take care,

                            Good comments. ^

The one thing I have notice about CMR4, while the graphics are much improved and the course design is probably the best so far for a Colin game, the scenery doesn't seem to mix it up as much. Some countries are nice, like Japan, but most of them just don't seem to have the variety of roadside scenery I am used to - be it parked cars, houses, churches, tracktors...everything just seems a little more desolet this season. Not to mention when are these guys going to add some real crowds - I know this isn't legally the WRC but at least give me more than a dozen cutout spectators.

I too notice the acceleration thing. They always seemed to nail that in the past - very odd they missed this season.

Damage is pretty spectacular and I love the new advanced mode. If you tear into the car you might notice the car pulling to one side or gears slipping but really I would like it to be even more pronounced. Maybe it will up the damage even more once you unlock expert mode?

Also I wish the would have reworked the scoreboards before the US release. Man, that could have been so much cooler than it is. Something like PGR2's instantanious scoreboard would have ruled but they at least could have broke it down by car class and given us a menu instead of having to flip page by page. I am hoping RSC2 lets you setup seasons over XSN. Kind of the way Links is setup - just let people logon and play race their stages when they have time. It would work perfect for rally since it doens't have to be head to head.

Also I found Grist - he is Co-Driver B ... or if not Grist someone that sounds a lot like him.
