    RIP Darrell Russell

ESPN: Dragster breaks up at 300 mph

I don't think I see much NHRA talk here on the board but this evening the world of motorsports lost Top Fule Driver Darrell Russell after a tire came apart on the top end.

Godspeed, Russell is the first driver to lose his life at a NHRA national event since Elmer Trett and Blaine Johnson at Indy in 1996

i saw part of the first round, and the end of tonight's show, just surfing. There was a really somber feeling, this is really sad. I'm not a big drag racing guy, doubt i ever will, but anytime a racer dies it sucks

i was watching the race with my brother and his family, we were about to go swimming when we saw darrell wreck, my 1st thought was get out of there darrell. then i was about to get a shower when the director of nhra said that darrell had died, i just felt sick to my stomach after that. it was sad because he won just 2 weeks ago, and now hes gone. my thoughts are with his family and friends. its such a sad day in nhra. the fans didnt know anything about darrell's death until after the final race of the night.

What a shame. I worked for NHRA from 1993-97, so I was working at IRP in 1996 on the consecutive afternoons when Blaine Johnson and Elmer Trett were killed. A tragic, sad, gut-punching weekend that I'll never forget, so I know the kind of pain the entire straight-line community is feeling, and my heart and prayers go to them.

I never knew Darrell Russell, as he was racing Top Alcohol Dragster at the time. He stepped in for Joe Amato after I left NHRA. But friends of mine who still work for NHRA have said Russell was an extremely nice guy who was a damn good driver.

What a shame. It's days like this that make you realize how brave drivers are. There are no 15-yard or two-minute penalties in racing. It's a sport that sadly can cause its competitors to pay the ultimate price in an instant.

                Take care,

I'm not a racing fan but it always pains me to hear about someone dying on the circuit. Just like with Earnhardt a couple years ago, it makes you realize how quickly life can end.
According to my old marketing professor, satisfaction is when product performance meets or exceeds consumer expectation.
