how do guys consistantly at the bottom of the Nascar races survive?

I always see Kirk Shelmerdine, and others, finishing in the late 30's or early 40's, and wonder how they can get the cash to survive? NASCAR's gotta be a hella expensive sport, anyone have any insight?

They are at the bottom for that very reason, they don't have the money for engineering, ect of a great car like the big boys do.

Yeah most only have 1 or 2 cars and often borrow tires from other teams to use in qualifying. Then on race day, they run about 5 laps at most, get points and collect their checks. By getting the check each week they are trying slowly to build up their bank. The majority of the big teams money comes from sponsors while the bottom feeders get little to none.

Isn't like 12,000 just to enter a Nascar Nextel Cup race? At least thats what Michael Waltrip said on the Nascar Nextel show on Monday nights. Cause I e-mail them that question and they answered it on the air.
