I was surprised there wasn't a thread about this earlier.

I first saw this on the Mike and Mike show on ESPNews this morning when I first got up. I was sure something more serious had happened... I actually had a lump in my throat. Good thing he wasn't seriously injured or anything.

after watchin the replays it looks like when the car hit the barrier or something like that and it hit the fuel tank in the back and starting catching on fire. so he was indeed lucky that he didnt get any serious burns

                Re: Dale Jr...Up in flames!!

If Jr. had been knocked out a little bit more than he was, I think that his chance at a Cup this year would have been dashed out of the window or we might have been going through something a whole lot more serious. As I heard people talking today, he did everything except throw the chance out the window.

                      Well, those people are idiots.

I have a hell of a lot more respect for guys like Junior and Robby Gordon than other Cup drivers because they're willing to try different kinds of race cars. They're race car drivers -- not stock car drivers. And there's a HUGE difference.

Back in the 60s and 70s, everyone was a race car driver, not a specialist driver. Guys like Foyt, Mario, Gurney, the Allisons, Yarborough, Jim Clark, Stewart, Donohue -- they drove anything with four wheels.

Sure, schedules were looser and the money wasn't as big then, but those guys were RACE drivers. There aren't many of those left in worldwide racing today.

Wouldn't you guys love to see Gordon race F1? Junior and Harvick try Indy? Jimmie Johnson and Sam Hornish Jr. run Le Mans? Schumacher and Montoya in the Daytona 500?

That's what happened in the old days. Hell, Mario won the Daytona 500, the Indy 500 and the F1 World Championship. Graham Hill won Indy, Monaco and Le Mans. Foyt has won Indy, Daytona and Le Mans. Jim Clark was an F1 champion and a great rally driver.

Even this year, Colin McRae lost his WRC ride, so he has raced in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Dakar Rally. Talk about competing in two cool events on the opposite end of the racing spectrum -- both in the same year! That's awesome.

Too bad it never will happen today among guys who have full-time rides in major series. And for those who think Junior shouldn't deviate from his Cup ride to try other forms of racing, I have some advice: Candy a*s, try becoming a race fan instead of just a NASCAR fan. There's a BIG difference.

                      Take care,
