Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

Just ran Mexico. My gearbox was starting to flirt with being worn out but I gambled, kept it in and qualified fourth.

About halfway through I lost one of the lower gears but luckily it didn't affect me much. It seemed to resolve itself later in the race.

Bottas was really on a tear...he finished first about 15 seconds ahead of me. I never saw him after the pit stop.

I spent the whole rest of the race after my stop keeping Kimi from passing me for second, it was WORK but i got it done. Thank goodness for that last sector with all the braking. He finished about three feet behind me for third.

Exciting! Now, on to grid penalties at Brazil for my new gearbox!! It better last through Abu Dhabi!!!!

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

Just missed out on my first podium in Canada. I was really looking forward to Canada after a disappointing Spain (14th) and Monaco (DNF), and I had a heckuva weekend. (My results, by race, headed into Canada: 19, 9, 8, 9, 14, DNF).

I qualified in pole position by .9 second ahead of Lewis Hamilton. I tuned the car fully for speed and it worked out. Before Monaco, I'd swapped out all of my engine parts to take the grid penalties, so I have really a pretty fresh car, and just figured out how to race Canada (once I got the hang of the hairpin, and that final chicane).

Onto the race: Started off fine, though Hamilton overtook me basically right away, followed by Vettel at turn 4. Then I goofed up and bumped into the back of Vettel heading into Turn 6. My strategy called for just one pit stop in lap 7, and switching from US to SS at that time. My front wing damage was minor, and I was still able to control my car, so I just kept racing.

In lap 3, Jeff said rain would start in about 5-10 minutes. I kept pushing, and was able to keep in P3. Hamilton and Vettel pulled away from me, but Perez was behind me and kept fighting with Bottas, so I was doing all right. With the rain coming a little bit later, I decided to stretch my US tyres an extra lap. Because of this, I pitted in lap 8 and put on my Inters. I was the first car with Inters, and came out of the pit in P14. The rain didn't come...

I was basically just spinning my tires...got up to P12 thanks to Grosjean's engine failure and someone else going wide, but the rain still hadn't come in lap 12, so my car didn't have the pace...until it finally came in lap 13. Cars in front slowed way down and started sliding around, so I was up in P8 by the end of the lap, and everyone else was pitting to put on their Inters. I emerged in P2. 20 seconds behind Hamilton, and 7 seconds ahead of Vettel. Just had to hang on for 5 laps.

Safety car. Ugh. Basically, there was a safety car during laps 15 and 16. I was never able to catch up to Hamilton during the period, but Perez caught up to me, followed by Bottas and Vettel. Safety car leaves, and I just had to hang on for 2 laps. At the very end, I was about 1 second ahead of Perez...took the final chicane a little too fast and got a 3-second penalty. I crossed the finish line in second, but finished P5.

It's still my best finish so far, and I felt pretty good about the race overall. I finally employed a smart strategy, and didn't let myself spin out. It was just that final chicane...I think I overextended on it 3 times during the race and ended up with that penalty.

Now I get to go to Azerbaijan, which looks like a tough race. Lot of high speeds, and a heavy downforce section. My car so far seems to get decent speed...but I really struggle with grip. I've been focusing my development on increasing reliability of parts. I think once I've gotten everything up a level, I'll focus on downforce next.

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

After a disappointing DNF at Monaco (God taht place!), I have been spending my Holidays playing this, and managed to get in three races in the past 3 days.

I came back strong for a 4th place finish in Canada, after qualifying 9th, that was a lot of fun.

Next up was Azerbaijan and I have come to really enjoy that course. Once I learned how to handle the castle section, that track is a real pleasure. I qualified 7th, but only managed to finish 13th, when... wait for it.... I ran out of fuel on the final stretch!!! I coasted across the finish line after several cars zipped past me! LOL I *could* have finished 3rd! Dangit!

Austria was perfectly uneventful! I qualified 4th, but started 3rd after a penalty Vettel received. After a couple laps, things settled down, Kimi took Hamilton in turn 3 and never looked back. I was perfectly content to finish 3rd, but when I pitted, I got STUCK in my pen when a freaking line of cars was zipping by into the pit and I coulnd't pull out!!! I ended up with an 8 second pit stop and finished 5th!!! Gah!!!

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

Following up my career-high finish of P5 in Canada (despite it being slightly disappointing thanks to a penalty), I had some great races in Azerbaijan and Austria. Finished P2 in Baku, followed up by a P1 in Austria (after restarting the race. Anecdote below):

I qualified in P1 in Austria, about a full second ahead of Hamilton. After this, I decided it would be my final race before upping the difficulty. (Was still at 40). But wanted to see if I could hang on to P1 first.

During the race, Jeff informed me that rain would be coming a bit later. My pit strategy called for one stop, which I performed. Then I had to perform a 2nd stop to switch to Inters. Basically, though, I was running fine and in first place. Until the rain hit, and carnage swept through the field. Safety Car.

During the safety car, I hit something of a glitch. Jeff told me to slow down, while the screen popped up and told me to speed up to keep pace. Due to the rain and the curves, I wasn't able to speed up as much as it wanted me to. I got disqualified from the race with like 3 laps left. I can deal with losing, etc...but this DQ just ticked me off, so I shut the game off and decided to restart the race.

In my re-try, I knew the rain was coming and decided to stay out on the track until the rain started. Made no big mistakes, and the rain started at the beginning of a lap. It wasn't too slippery for me, and I was able to get to the pit. Due to this strategy of doing just the one stop, I emerged from the pits 24 seconds ahead of P2. Just hung on for the final 5 laps and took my first Grand Prix win. It was super satisfying.

Then I bumped difficulty up to 50.

I'm not sure whether it was the difficulty, or just the circuit...but I just couldn't get my pace up in Britain. I qualified in P14, which was my lowest position since Monaco, though basically on par with my team expectations. Cut to the race. I'd like to get up to the points, but mostly want to survive...Get caught in traffic in turn 2, and spin out into the grass. Now I'm ticked off and in P20.

I emerged from the grass about 8 seconds behind P19. I spent the next 2 laps catching up to the pack, before starting to pass my way back to my starting point. I decided to push my tires out an extra couple of laps after others pitted, and I had to pit when I was in P4. Emerged in P15, and climbed up into P12 before I just couldn't push the car enough to catch anyone else. All in all, it was super satisfying to just push the car as hard as possible. I just wish I'd taken my engine penalties to start with, and just started in P20.

Then onto Hungary, where I've finished qualifying and I'm in P5. I'm finding that my Haas really has decent straightline speed, and I just really struggle around the turns with keeping pace. Hungary doesn't have any super long straight lines (like Baku, which I loved racing), but there are enough straightaways that I'm able to gain some time.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Hungary race.

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

I don't know if this is going to make any sense, but I was hoping for some advice or input on something I am working on. I have made it to year 4 of my franchise running with McLaren Honda and I am having some issues that are bothering me. Actually I should say I am not having issues which is my problem.

As I get farther into career mode it seems like the AI really does not manage parts very well. I have gotten my team into the top 4-6 in most categories. The AI seems to be having engine and mechanical problems more than I do and they certainly do not manage when they take penalties for new parts as well as I do. In fact I don't think I have had mechanical issues during a race at all last season or so far into this year 4.

Performance wise I am very happy with this years game. I have found a level that keeps things competitive race wise. I am just trying to figure out some "House Rules" for lack of a better term to keep the mechanical and upgrade balance between the User and the AI. I love the fact that the User can now have all sorts of issues with parts of the car and just general malfunctions. But once you progress to a certain point we seem to be able to develop ourselves out of the possibility of having mechanical issues.

A few ideas I am thinking of are as follows.

Setting a limit percentage that I can't replace a part. Such as say 75% wear

Limiting when I can replace parts or order more parts past the original allotment. Say like I can only replace parts on Free Practice 2 so I have to race with whatever changes I make unless a part breaks completely. Maybe only ordering new parts when all other parts are used and there is no other option.

Any way if you all have some input I would appreciate it. I know people say just have fun. But making things harder/realistic is what gives me a good play experience. It helps me to get life out of games and really spend some time with it. If I could find setting or "House Rules" to set up that I actually did not win everything until like year 7 or later in a career mode with this game I would be on cloud nine. As it stands right now I should be on track to win it all in year 5 with McLaren and the way it stands now I really don't find moving on to a stronger team appealing. So if I can find some tweaks, I may just start over.

                  Thanks for "listening".

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

No pictures for this update...as something incredibly weird happened.

United States Gran Prix...qualify 9th but grid penalties take me down to 19th. Finish 13th...but here’s where it gets weird.

Vettel wins the race and before I cross the finish line, I get a notification that Sergio Perez was out of the race. Dude was parked past the finish line.

So then when the cut scene played, it was Hulkenberg and not Vettel on top of the podium?!?!? Vettel was in third!?!???

So I ended up re-running the race and then simulating to the end.

                    I finished 9th.

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

I feel like I short changed you guys last time, so I figured I would give you a full report this time.

First of all, the patch. Oh my goodness, McLaren got some much-needed love from this patch. And suddenly, Fernando Alonso is driving like the teammate he should be. Mexico is a track where the second and third sectors really match up with our car. It's that vaunted front stretch that scares the daylights out of me. But, we came to Mexico with a new crankshaft, so there is that. In practice, we turning speeds that put us in the middle of the pack. In P3, the gearbox started becoming problematic, forcing us to make a gearbox change and taking a penalty.

We qualified 7th, but after changing the gearbox, I went ahead and switched to a new turbocharger, giving us a ten spot penalty. Hopefully, the parts on the car can get through these last three races. It is a very jumbled field as many drivers have taken grid penalties. I have points leader Bottas starting right in front of me, so my strategy is to just follow him.

And I was able to maintain that starting strategy as I just stuck with Bottas the best I could as we methodically made our way up into the top ten in the opening laps. I was able to get past my teammate after Palmer did what Palmer does best and Alonso got caught in a Renault-Mercedes sandwich and I was able to overtake both Palmer and Alonso.

Alonso and I were on different strategies in this race. Alonso employing a one-stop strategy. Myself a two-stop strategy since I qualified initially in the top ten and had to start the race on the ultra softs. Alonso nearly made it work to finally finish in front of me for the first time this season, but I was able to chase him in the closing laps, and secured myself a 7th place finish, while Alonso scored his first points of the season with an 8th place finish.

Sebastian Vettel dominated this race, passing pole sitter Lewis Hamilton on lap three and cruising to a 32-second margin of victory. Points leader Valtteri Bottas suffered a mechanical failure, causing his 25 point lead over Hamilton to be trimmed to nine points and Vettel is only 14 points back with two races to go. It's on to Brazil.

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

Had my most disappoint race since Monaco at Suzuka. For whatever reason, my Haas just didn't have any pace all weekend. The P2 and P3 sessions were wet, so I couldn't really get any good laps in. (Did okay in P1 with Tyre, fuel and acclimatization sessions). My Qualifying was fine...Have trouble staying on the track in some spots, so I had to run more laps than I usually do. Snuck into Q2 in P15, then hit P11 in Q2 just before the rain came. Once that came, I knew I was slotted into P11.

The race was just plain terrible. For some reason, the team had me starting on Softs and finishing on SuperSofts. I went along with it, then discovered that everyone around me was on SuperSofts. By the end of the first lap I was in P16 and just trying to fight to keep up with my goal of P15 or higher. Ran wide on the final chicane in P2, let Alonso get close to me, and he bumped me. Knocked his rear around turn 1 of lap 2 and had front wing damage. I tried holding off a pit stop for an extra lap, but I just had no pace. I pitted and put on SuperSofts during lap 3. (It was either that, or try running mediums the rest of the race).

Plainly, I had no pace. For some reason, Raikkonnen was in the back with me. And by the end of the race, he was a good 30 seconds in front of me. The only positive of this race was that I finished...and that's just marginally positive.

This terrible race is coming off Malaysia, where I qualified in P5, fell back to P8 in the first lap and worked my way up into P6 by the 3rd lap, where I stayed the entire race (after pit stops played out). Finished about 8 seconds behind 5th and 15 seconds ahead of 7th. It was a weird race for me.

I'm sitting in 8th place in the driver standings, about 25 points behind Perez in 7th. (Top 6 are Mercedes, Red Bulls and Ferraris of course). My goal over the last 4 races is to catch Perez. I'm comfortably 30 points ahead of Sainz in 9th, and think I'm pretty well assured to finish in 7th or 8th place.

Really thought I was done with P20 finishes. Was P6 in Malaysia, P12 in Singapore and P2 in Monza.

Looking hard at whether to switch off Haas in year 2...but I think the "top" team I will get an offer from is Williams. Looks like they have more power than Haas, but are lacking in the same exact areas of downforce and chassis.

I wouldn't call Williams a top team...but they do have that Mercedes power unit, so there is that. I'm also trying to decide if I want to stay with McLaren or move to another team in Season 2. It looks like Williams will be the top offer as well if my reputation screen is anything to go by.

Yeah, Suzuka has that effect. It's one of the tracks I despise in racing games. Love watching it on TV...hate driving it.

Taking paid time off has its merits...more time for F1. It's on to Interlagos and the very soggy Brazilian Grand Prix. Qualified 7th, but I needed to switch out the MGU-H...so another grid penalty. Perhaps I should drop points into reliability. But then again, it seems like a good check and balance on me.

I wasn't the only one taking a grid penalty. At Brazil...EVERYBODY took grid penalties. Hell, Kevin Magnussen started a lap down. No seriously. He was listed as starting 20th, but he was in the fourth position on the grid and was blue flagged right from the start. The mixed up grid sees the front row locked out by Sauber. Hilarity is sure to ensue.

Have I mentioned that I love running in the rain? And the forecast calls for rain throughout, so it looks like an intermediate kind of day. Start of the race and I slowly start slicing my way through the field. With the mixed up running order, several of the top guys are caught in traffic while I'm making moves that would make Max Verstappen at the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix proud (seriously, look it up on YouTube, that dude was making some crazy overtakes...he would've won that race if Red Bull hadn't butchered the strategy).

Lewis Hamilton made quick work of the Saubers, moving up from sixth to first and pretty much ran away from everybody. Palmer in his Renault also made quick work of the Saubers and moved into the second. In my first stint, I had moved up to third place but I couldn't get any closer to Palmer so I employed an undercut and came in a lap before Palmer. The undercut worked to perfection as I passed him on pit road into second. I have no hope of catching Hamilton, but I'll take another podium finish.

Tempers flared in Force India as Perez and Ocon came together again.

Horrible luck for Alonso, as he got caught up in the Force India feud and finished 15th.

Unfortunately for me, Kimi Raikkonen was running third, and it doesn't matter if it's raining or snowing, I'm not going to outrun a Ferrari. Raikkonen was slicing a second off the interval every lap, and he finally caught me. Catching and passing are two different things though. Sectors 2 and 3 were money for me. It was Sector 1 that I struggled in and twice Raikkonen made a move on me going into Turn 4, and twice he locked up and I snuck back under him.

The third time was the charm though, as I think the Ice Man was getting annoyed that he couldn't get around me. He stretched his elbows out and shoved me off track in Turn 4. It was good clean racing from the AI, so I'm not mad.

In the closing laps, Sebastian Vettel started turning the track purple as he kept setting fast laps of the race and now I got another Ferrari all over me. Luckily for me, we started catching backmarkers. I used those backmarkers to my advantage, and I was able to maintain my podium finish in third place.

Back to back wins for Hamilton sees him vault into the lead of the World Driver's Championship. The final race of the season at Yas Marina Circuit will be a title decider.

All four drivers have a shot at the World Title. Barring a total collapse by Mercedes, their 37 point cushion should see them through to the Constructor's Title. As for me, I'm sitting eight points behind Sergio Perez for seventh place in the driver's standings. And barring a collapse on our part and an ungodly performance by Haas, we have secured fifth place in the constructor's race.

And there are some rumblings that representatives from Red Bull Racing were seen talking to my representatives. Hmm.....

Re: F1 2017...How is your career going?

Man, the US Grand Prix was fun. I was able to qualify in P5, behind the Mercedes and Ferraris, with Raikkonen in 4. In the overall championship, Vettel started out way ahead and Hamilton has been storming back. If he could win in the US or Mexico and score ahead of Vettel in the other, they'd be about tied. Also, Mercedes took over the Constructor Championship lead.

Race starts, and I pass Raikkonen on the first turn, and stick there for a while. I think about pitting early, but decide to wait till lap 8...I get lucky and there is a full-lap yellow during that lap, just before I get to the pit. Pit in P3 and emerge in P5, just behind Raikkonen again. Pass him to get to P4 in DRS. Then something happens with Hamilton and he is unable to finish the race, so I'm up to P3. Then Vettel and Bottas didn't pit during the caution, so I was able to get by them in their pit. Then I just had to hang on for 5 laps, which I was able to. So I won on my home Grand Prix! 1 race after finishing P20 in Japan...

Next was Mexico. I qualified in P7. Top 6 included each of the Ferraris, Red Bulls and Mercedes, except Verstappen was P11 and Perez was P6. The race was pretty standard. I knocked my front wing during the first lap, but hung on to P7 until I hit my strategy. I was falling behind P6 by about a second per lap, but was able to hold Hulkenberg and Grosjean off behind me till my pit.

Out of the pit in P20, behind Kvyat. Got up to P14 after 2 laps. Then passed a couple of others in the pits. Then Verstappen retired, and Hamilton had another issue (he finished in P12).

Got up to P7 again, trailing Grosjean. I passed him for 6th in that L turn after the last long straight, in a rather dangerous move, on the final lap.

Anyway, Vettel has now clinched the World Championship. Personally, I'm headed into the last 2 races 10 points behind Perez for 7th place. After I won in America, Red Bull was interested in me, but now Sauber is back ahead of them. If I can do well enough in Brazil and Abu Dhabi to attract a Red Bull offer, that's where I'm headed. If not, I'll probably stick with Haas.

Last lap contact allows Sebastian Vettel to lock down 2017 title by one point.

Sebastian Vettel came into the Abu Dabhi Grand Prix twenty points behind Lewis Hamilton and thanks to grid penalties, was starting the race dead last. Vettel had the drive of his life, but it still looked like Lewis Hamilton was well on his way to his fifth World Championship. On the last lap though, it all changed.

It all started with Hamilton trying to pass rookie Jason Whitt going down the backstretch. Whitt made a move to the inside to squeeze Hamilton towards the wall, but then he moved back to the racing line. This disruption in Hamilton's line allowed Valtteri Bottas to slide his Mercedes between Hamilton and Whitt heading into turn 8. Hamilton and Bottas banged tires, which allowed Whitt to beat them to the inside of turn 9.

Three cars went for the same real estate. The Silver Arrows ended up sitting in the middle of the road. Then out of frustration, Hamilton made sure to hit Bottas again as he was able to get going, but not before they were passed by several cars. In the end, Vettel won the race, and Hamilton lost the world title by one point. Mercedes' 37 point cushion in the Constructor's race nearly evaporated completely, but Mercedes hung on by 3 points.

Hamilton called it a bush league move by the rookie and by his teammate. Whitt said he was on the racing line and that somebody else should've back out. The FIA called it a racing incident and deemed nobody at fault. There's going to be a lot of soul-searching at Mercedes this offseason. Ferrari has caught them. The relationship between Hamilton and Bottas is about as frosty now as Hamilton and Rosberg were. Then there is the emergence of the rookie Jason Whitt, who had a season for the ages for the severely underpower McLaren team.

The book has been closed on the 2017 season and it will be interesting to see how the 2018 season shakes out.
