Hmm ... did Jimmie Johnson retire or fall off the face of the Earth? I think JJ will win for a bunch of reasons:
1. He has the rare combination of knowing how to win races and be consistent when he has to.
2. Hendrick is motivated as hell because of the tragedy last fall and because it came so close to winning the Chase last year.
3. JJ and Gordon comprise the best 1-2 punch in NASCAR and will work together to get themselves in position to win the title.
No way Junior will win the Chase this year, especially after moving Tony Eury Sr. and Tony Eury Jr. away from his team to another DEI team. This will be a year of transition for Junior.
I don't think Newman will win, either. He's still too much of a "checkers or wreckers" driver, and Penske's attention will be focused on Rusty this year to give him a very strong final season.
Kahne is an excellent pick for a dark horse, although he's so good that it shouldn't be that surprising if he wins a lot of races and contends for the Cup. My two true dark horses are Jamie McMurray and Elliott Sadler.
McMurray would have finished seventh in the points last year under the old system, and he's a solid driver if he can keep his ego and temper in check. Sadler was the most improved driver of the year last year, in my book. He now is the de facto leader of the Yates team, and he'll only improve. He proved last year he can win races; consistency is the only thing missing.
Take care,
PK
