Re: Gran Turismo 7 Review - A Legacy of Love on Display

By far the part of this game that annoys me the most is the difficulty. The cars drive great and so you really do feel like you earn your way through the track.

The way that the game is difficult is what annoys me though. Rather than program good/smart AI, they just start you far in the back. I did a race a day or 2 ago where I literally started 40 seconds back of 1st, and I had to dodge cars breaking way too early into turns as I made my way to the front. Then after being 40 seconds faster than the leader through the first 4 laps and getting on their tail, they miraculously learn how to drive and have to fight it out for the last lap. This isn't anything new to the GT series, but it is one thing that I think Forza does far better.

I’m starting to get a hang of the livery editor in this game.

      It is extremely powerful.

I wish there were more formal races with qualifying and grid starts in the the campaign, maybe we get some more single player events in future updates, but I think I get what PD was going for here: they want to teach people proper race etiquette and how to pass cleanly so that online play is less likely to be populated by idiots playing bumper cars.

The AI is indeed not malicious and does a good job of sticking to the racing line and racing cleanly. I’ve seen cars successfully navigate turns going three-wide, and I the user was one of the three in the turn. Unlike Forza, I don’t think a GT AI driver will ever retaliate if you push it around. This probably makes the game easier, but if the AI were to react to your aggression, in a sense that’d be rewarding your aggression, which PD doesn’t want. Similar for visual car damage; never mind the licensing costs, seeing a car crumble spectacularly would in a sense be a reward for driving haphazardly or with premeditated ill will. PD doesn’t want that in their online play.

Additionally - you literally earn 50% more prize money if you complete a race without hitting an opponent. A bunch of the NPC text blurbs talk about respectful racing. The license tests remain in the game to gate off content after all these years. The online Sport mode warns you about and grades you on sportsmanship in addition to skill every time you touch it.

GT is a racing game that very much wants you to engage with the sport and culture of auto racing on its terms. This is a stark contrast to Forza (especially the later Forza games and Forza Horizon) where the mindset Turn 10 and Playground Games set out for is “here’s a bunch of cars, do whatever you want with these cars, and we will make sure you have fun doing it”. That’s not a criticism at all; I love the Forza games. Just a wildly different approach.

It’ll be interesting once their competitive AI Sophy goes online.

Very different approach for sure, but it's just kind of aggravating at times lol. It's nothing new in any racing game to be put at the back of the field and have to navigate your way towards the front. That much I don't even mind, thought it would be nice if the AI were a little faster. When you literally start almost a minute behind the leader though (I think it's the WTC championship series that really got me onto this rant), that's something else entirely. There is no way that you should be able to make up a 40 second differential in just 5 laps unless your car is just stupidly more powerful than the others, which isn't the case when the race limits you to 600 PP. But it's an attainable challenge because the AI (especially those in the back half of the field) are so incredibly bad at driving.

And it's just annoying when the AI that you're chasing down goes into a turn 20mph slower than they should (because how else can you overcome a 40 second lead) and you then have to dodge them or come to a near stop. Not saying that I hate the game because I'm thoroughly enjoying it, just nitpicking. It's just when I compare it to something like Forza Motorsport (Horizon is definitely more free form), Forza feels like I'm racing both the track and other racers. I need to use proper racing lines and braking because there isn't a lot of parity among the power of the AI cars or the AI drivers. GT at times feels like I'm racing the track and obstacles the game throws at me to slow me down. Though to be fair, Forza also has a lot more difficulty sliders. Without cranking up some of the difficulty sliders then that game might actually be easier than GT.

The title update went live on PS5 overnight, but the game is mostly unplayable at the moment due to server maintenance.

I doubt they'll change course but maybe this extended maintenance problem will make them rethink the always online for single player.

I think they started that with GT6, maybe even 5. It's extremely frustrating as someone who doesn't even have a PS Plus account to play online even if I wanted to

The downtime is annoying, but I'm equally disappointed to learn they are nerfing payouts. I'm not even "money farming" right now, but it always rubs me the wrong way when a game releases with certain income levels and then decides it is "too easy" for users to get money and increases the grind. It's also convenient they have microtransactions to avoid the grind if you so choose. I'm a little cynical about this practice, started with GTA:O for me.

I was relatively neutral on this game having MTX in the beginning, hoping they wouldn't make the experience unbalanced to push users towards them. I guess that was wishful thinking. One of the legend cars was $12 million credits, I think, which is equivalent to $120. They are basically advertising "this car is for whales only."

I do believe they increased the payoffs for some races. I dont know if that evens anything out though.

Gran Turismo 7 Review - A Legacy of Love on Display

Hard to say when no ones been able to play the game for over 24 hours now. Quite frankly if I didn’t like the gameplay so much I would be on the phone with Sony trying to get some of my money back. It’s absolutely ridiculous that they’re lowering payouts to try and make people use MTX. They’ve lowered all the races people made videos on YouTube for. I guarantee it wasn’t even a decision they came to themselves. They probably saw all the videos and said, well we can’t have it be that easy can we.

Now they’ve been totally silent for over 24 hours, not a single update on what’s going on. I don’t understand why A. They don’t thoroughly test their updates prior to making them live, or B. They haven’t already just gone back to 1.06 while they figure out what’s wrong with 1.07.

I’m sure it has something to do with
MTX and they don’t want us to have the ability to get the payouts from 1.06. This is also why you don’t make a game that’s made for mostly single player play that requires you to be connected to their servers to play. If we didn’t have the “sport” mode for days because servers were down I think people would be fine because they could play everything else.

The fact that we payed $70.00 for this game, some people even $90 and we haven’t been able to do anything on it for over 24 hours. Plus haven’t heard a peep out of Polyphony, it’s an absolute slap in the face to all their customers.

Again as much as I love this game, these developers are making my decision fairly easy for me. I will never give these guys any money ever again and I certainly won’t be spending any real money on MTX in their game, no matter how much they lower payouts. End rant [emoji23].

Even before nerfing the most efficient races, it wasn't like you could just do them a couple of times to get the most expensive cars.

Before the nerf I saw a video of someone talking about a race you could make 1.5m on if you grinded it out for an hour.
I have a Porsche invitation sitting out there that expires on 3/22. Even before the nerf, grinding this course for an hour would still not pay for this limited time car.

                                So yeah. 100% cash grab.
