Jeff Gordon wants to race in Canada

Here's some recent comments made by Jeff Gordon regarding racing in Canada. I know I for one would love to see a NASCAR race in Canada.

"I’d love to see us in Canada," Gordon said. "I think that staying in North America is extremely important. Canada to me seems like the next natural place for us to go. Obviously, Mexico went well for the Busch cars—that might be a good option as well. But I want to see us on an oval. I don’t want to see us on a road course in Canada. I think we can put on such a better show for the fans, and I know there are a lot of fans in Canada who follow NASCAR. I wish we had an oval track up there. If we’re going to go there, we need to start that process."
Sadly there isn't a sufficient oval track in Canada that I know of. The only track I can think of other than the track used for the Molson Indy that would work for NASCAR is MoSport International Raceway in Bowmanville.

It has a 2.5 mile 10 turn road course and a dinky half mile paved oval.

I know most of the gearheads here are Americans so I wonder what you guys think of NASCAR possibly in Canada?

Why not? There are many, many NASCAR fans in Canada, and nearly all of the sponsors and all of the auto manufacturers in NASCAR sell products in Canada. Makes good sense to me.

Plus, if the NBA and MLB can have franchises in Canada, why can't NASCAR race there once per year? It probably will take less time for the teams to travel from Charlotte to Ontario or Quebec than it will for them to travel to Sears Point or Fontana.

I think a NASCAR race in Canada would be fine, oval or road course.

    Take care,

I think it's a great idea to race in Canada better than racing in Mexico.........
Mexicans can just ran across the border and go Vegas or Fontana anyway

Re: Jeff Gordon wants to race in Canada

Well since it's been bumped up here's an update:

George Pyne, NASCAR's chief operating officer, says the stock car sanctioning body will visit Toronto and Montreal in the next 30 to 90 days with the goal of finding a suitable venue.

"The two markets are Toronto and Montreal. Where within those markets? Obviously it will be a road course. But where, we don't have an answer,"
            <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 width=266 align=right border=0><TBODY></TBODY></TABLE>

A NASCAR spokesperson says while series executives visit Canada from time to time, they don't have a definite timeline for a possible race here.

There have been whispers that Montreal's Gilles Villeneuve Circuit would be the ideal candidate for a NASCAR road race. However, promoter Norman Legault recently confirmed that he has a contract to operate only two races in the city each year - Formula One and Champ Car.

Toronto's lakeshore circuit, which is used to stage the annual Molson Indy, is not a suitable alternative in its current configuration, according to Pyne.

"Now it could be modified. That remains to be seen," he tells the newspaper. "But I'm told there are other locations in Toronto where we could run a road course smoothly."

Roush Racing owner Jack Roush says......

"I'd be fine with a Cup race in Mexico City and a Cup race in Montreal," he tells the Journal. "I'm not interesting in crossing the ocean to race on somebody else's continent.

"But we have roots, born and defined in the Southeast, and we could see it spread from Mexico to Canada and that would be fine. Our economies are spun together and our peoples are coming together.

"As long as we can satisfy our fans without loading our stuff on boats and going east or west is fine with me."

Given the climate in Canada, executives are likely looking at a June, July or August date for a NASCAR race.

The current Nextel Cup schedule is considered full and the series has plans to bring NASCAR racing to underserved areas of the United States first, such as the Pacific Northwest and New York City. That means a Nextel Cup race in Canada or Mexico is unlikely in the near future.

MoSport is a GREAT track! However it would be way to difficult for about 85-90% of those tin top drivers. They would be way in over their head at that place.

                    JC:

Have the run-off areas been expanded at Mosport? They're pretty small in some spots, especially for a careening, 3,600-pound stock car.

And you're right about Mosport: It makes Sears Point look like a picnic, so some of the NEXTEL Cup guys would b*tch up a storm if Cup went there.

                    Take care,

I dont think they have done any work on the run off up there. I would imagine they would have to in some corners though if NASCAR does go up there.
