Are assists another word for cheats, or are they legit?

I just picked up Forza last night, and the first thing I did was take it to a buddy's house, boot it up, turn off all assists, and ATTEMPT to drive. We were horrible. So naturally, to shut him up (he gets wildly upset at video games) we turned the assists back on, and had a pretty good night of racing.

Now that I'm home, I turned off all the assists except for the ABS. What I'm wondering, is are these assists "cheats" or are they legit? Like when my buddy was cussing, he argued that leaving them on is legit, because ABS is something that cars do have, and locking up and not being able to steer is bull*hit.

As for me, I know diddly squat about cars, so don't know if he's right or not. So I ask you guys.

So... is it not cheating, or should I turn them off, and learn to deal with it?

I know cars of course have ABS. Some cars also have a Traction Control System. The oversteer/understeer assist in simulation games seems messed up to me as I find I have more control of the car when they are off in the first place. But in cars that are driven competitively, they usually have no kind of assist.

The only assit I run is ABS as while not having them is cool, its not executed well with a controller where you dont have the feel of the brake as good as you would in a car.

I think ABS is the only thing that should be on as that is the one thing most racing cars will have. But any one of them is feasable in real life for certain cars and types of racing.

I also only use ABS. I couldn't get a hang of driving the cars without it.

Small tip, fellas: Go into the controller configuration screen and decrease the braking sensitivity. The default is a ridiculously high number. Lower it, and your brakes won't lock up nearly as easily, negating the need for ABS. You do have much better "feel" for your car in braking zones without ABS.

Remember, too, that Forza takes this into account with the credits system.
If you drive without any assists, you'll earn far more more points much faster than players who use them.

Soon enough, you'll see better players with superior cars due to how quickly they accrue points, and the best players also know how to set each car up for different tracks and conditions.

It's been very clear to me that the best players will still win their races over players who are still using the assists, and will earn many more points doing so.
The drivers using the assists, however, will learn faster, become better drivers, and in the meanwhile, will still be able to compete and have fun with the game.
            That's just fine with me.

Any game that helps you improve and keeps you from becoming frustrated and giving up in the interim is a well-designed title. Forza is most certainly one of those titles.

So, the learning curve for Forza is pretty damn good huh?

I want this game so bad, but the depth of it kind've scares me because I'm not a car-nut (I love the looks) so downforce and all that stuff goes right over my head. This game sounds/looks sick...

You can have a ton of fun with this game without ever changing the car's setup. And every time you upgrade parts on your car, the increase in power, handling, braking, etc., is shown right on the screen.

This game is accessible to everyone, from gearhead to Sunday driver.

Wow, I'm literally trembling after reading that. I thought I had fun in Need For Speed Underground 2, I can't wait to get my paws on this game.

You sure you have an option for this in the controller config screen? I can't find anything in the config screen about the braking.

In career mode, after upgrading the brakes on a car, I can do what you just mentioned by adjusting things in the car tuning.

I hope you're right, and I'm simply overlooking it, because it sounds downright handy to be able to use all of the left trigger, instead of just a tenth or so of it.

I may have the wrong screen. Might be in the tuning. Sorry!

I'm working now. I'll check it out tonight.

I agree with PK, anyone can play this racer, from the casual fan to the diehard. Forza can be setup for either one, you can have the assists and the green line to follow or you can play with them off. Choice is yours for on and offline. It's fine with me if someone uses assists, as I use them to get used to a car or track then turn them back off, but the assists allow you to learn the game and the cars and tracks, for that I love it. So far, my favorite racer in a long, long time, maybe ever.

Yep, I had the wrong screen, sorry. The brake sensitivity can be adjusted in each car's setup screen, not the controller configuration.

Thanks for the tip pk. I'll have to go in and lower my braking sensitivity. I've been having an internal battle over the whole ABS thing but decided for the time being that I want to learn to drive with all assists off. I'm not much of a racer to begin with but Forza gives everybody the opportunity to learn how to race with the Drivatar mode and the amount of information given while watching a replay. I'd have to say that Forza is my favorite racing game ever right now.
