PS3 region free?

I am currently living in Asia. I've seen a few PS3's around town and they are all Japanese models.

I am okay with getting a Japanese one (if I get one) as long as they're 100% region free?

I.e. I can play any games from the US? (NTSC)

Can play football games from Europe? (PAL)

Is there any link that confirms the PS3 as completely region free?

Games are region free, but up to developer. Movies, Japan and America share the same blu-ray region.

Yes its all region free. Its not by disc, as I believe it was built into the system itself. So all games from everywhere should work no matter where you get the PS3.

It isn't region free for PS2 games though. Just PS3 games.

The systems are region free and so far every game from Japan and USA all work fine on the Japanese systems. However, there's no saying that future games will work because as backbreaker said, it's up to the developer to lock the region code on the disc.

Why does everyone keep saying this??

If the system that you are playing a region locked disc on is region free, then the disc will play... it has nothing to do with the code that is on the disc... Region Free means that whatever code is on the disc does not matter... Thats why people with dvd players search tirelessly for region free codes for their players... It has nothing to do with the code that is on the disc, if the player is region free.... If the player was not region free, like the 360, then the code on the disc would matter...

The developers who said this are a bunch of rumps, unless sony has some special region free setting built in to the PS3 thats never been used before, it will not be possible for them to lock out specific regioned games...

Yeah, same with the PSP...all games region free.

UMB movies NOT region free (not that anyone bought any anyway...)
