    Re: Consoles going away?

I think that consoles are making a comeback personally. More people are getting into console gaming now. The games are becoming ripe. Everyone thinks that PC is going to make that super rise back to the top but that freaking thing is so much more expensive. Yeah, there are certain things that are cheap in the PC world, but ain't no way in hell a PC going to be cheaper than the console. Consoles will continue to be more affordable and more accessible. I have to definitely disagree. Gamepads are more appealing and all that stuff. I just can't see the PC being the end all in gaming.

Of course the wii will survive because it's not competing with the pc for games or gamers.

I was joking. He said that only the wii will survive, that's why I said that.

                Re: Consoles going away?

I'm actually a PC Gamer that converted to console about 5 years ago because PC gaming was just such a big pain in the *** (constant upgrading of components, drivers, game incompatibility)...plus, I just wanted to sit on my couch and have a little fun.

Are games on the PC technically better...many times yes. Are most gamers (other than the really hardcore guys) going to spend the money necessary to play the latest and greatest....highly unlikely.

My console plays every game out of the box...and that's the way I like it.

No. Simply because there will always be more casual gamers than hardcore gamers (as evidenced by the popularity of Madden). Casual gamers will not want to have to update their computer every year or so just to keep up with the current games.
Overall satisfaction also makes the decline!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hit the nail right on the head. Consoles aren't going anywhere because the upkeep for PC's is expensive and a huge pain.

                      Re: Consoles going away?

I myself can't really get into PC gaming for two reasons:

                      1) constant need to upgrade the PC in order to play the most recent games
                      2) seemingly the only good games for the PC are first-person shooters, RTS games, and MMORPGs, all of which seem to focus on online play which is not as big of a concern for me personally

I realize that my second statement is a blanket assumption, but that's the impression I get when I look for new PC games. The only PC game I'm looking at getting in the future, Spore, doesn't fall into these genres.

I suspect that there are others out there who share my sentiments.

                        Re: Consoles going away?

It costs way too much to constantly upgrade my PC to play all the new games. I had to pay over 6 bills to get a graphics card to run Half Life 2 properly. I can't imagine what I'll have to pay to play Crysis.

                        I'll stick with Consoles.

You're not seeing the forest through the trees, man. Yes, consoles are offering more options than ever with DVD/Blu-ray players, Web browsing and other multimedia apps.

But no console EVER will offer as many features as even a lightly equipped PC. A PC can do word processing, chat, intensive graphics work, multimedia, TV, streaming audio, streaming video, downloads from all sources, spreadsheets, etc., etc.

So a decent PC tricked out for gaming, while more expensive than a console, is a MUCH better value as an all-in-one family entertainment and productivity tool than a console. And with console prices now climbing to $400 and above, the price gap between a good PC and a top-of-the-line console is a hell of a lot smaller than it used to be.

Granted, I play a lot of older racing sims and shooters on the PC, so having the latest-and-greatest hardware isn't vital for me. But my PC can do a HELL of a lot more than a console, and it wasn't that much more expensive than an Xbox 360 Core or a 60 GB PS3. Plus the games, even the older ones, look damn good and have incredible mod communities that add tons of FREE add-ons and mods that the console community doesn't have.

                          Take care,
                          PK

                            Re: Consoles going away?

Most gamers who discovered consoles just got tired constant upgrades, installation and driver issues. Upgrade and feeding the machine for more power adds up. I build my own systems now for the 10 years, it still adds up. That's why I switched a long time ago to consoles.

Last year I built a very solid gaming rig ($1200) to run the latest racing sims. One year later it's badly outdated and won't run Vista without another investment ($800-$900).

For that money I could have purchased 5 Xbox 360's. I don't think consoles will fade away in fact they're stronger than ever revenue wise.

                              Re: Consoles going away?

OK. No, a onsole won't replace a PC in terms the sheer amount of things it can do. I imagine that when these debates come up, we are talking about the aspect of Gaming. For me, it's console all day, and no I don't see it going anywhere. PC IS expensive. Almost every year that latest game comes out, you have to get the latest hardware to run it to it's full capacity. Those dollars stack up, and personally, I justcan't afford to do it.

I started playing Guild Wars (PC CO-RPG) in 05'. My computer ran it at it's highest settings with no problems, I could have another program like WinAmp running in the background, with no loss in quality. Nowadays the same game, same computer, due to updates runs slower, uses way more resources and I have to now play with the settings at it's lowest. 2 years from now, when I put a game in like Oblivion for instance, it will still run the same. The latest and greatest game for the 360 won't require more power than my 360 has. I won't have to go and purchase a new graphics card, or RAM to enjoy myself.

Now of course, the PC is the more poweful, and more suited as an all around media hub. But to be a hardcore pc gamer costs a lot more money than I am willing to spend. I am sure there are more people out like me who can't afford continuous upgrades to play that new Half Life.
                              PS: You guys are great.
