    Wii Beginner's Help

A few various questions about picking up a Wii.

-What controllers do I need? I have GC controllers and I will be getting an extra WiiMote with the WiiPlay pack. Is a second nunchuck needed? What exactly are the classic controllers used for? I want to get one for the VC games, is that their main purpose or are they used in Wii games as well?

-Memory Card - Will any SD card work? I've seen 2 GB Wii cards selling for $50. Are they even needed? I can't really understand what they are used for, do you have to have one for game saves or are they for VC content?

-Games - I'm lost here. I'm leaning towards Super Paper Mario as my first game, but I'm not sure. I had and beat Zelda: TP for GC so I'm going to pass on it. I've heard good things about The Godfather game, is there a good amount of replay value? I'm also interested in a golf game, but apparently TW is boarderline unplayable, how is the Super Swing Golf game? Is it good enough to be worth getting by itself or is the WiiSports golf good enough? Recommendations on any others I haven't listed would be appriciated as well.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone has to offer with my questions.

On certain games the nunchuck is needed to use with the extra wiimote. I would get one if I were you.

Classic controller is for the VC content not regular Wii games.

Any SD card will work (Except the SDHC cards). They are really not needed unless you want to use to backup saves to them or load pictures.
You can get them cheaper online at places like tigerdirect.com.

I hated Super Swing golf. Madden is very fun though. Elebits is also a cool game IMO.

Hey Skyboxer, can you tell me a little bit about elebits? Is it a really short game? I've read a couple of reviews and they say it's about 15-20 hours. Multiplayer fun? I'm looking for other games for my daughter and I to play. We have Rayman. I was thinking about Warioware and/or Elebits. Thanks

        Thanks for the response SkyBoxer.

I've got one more question, is there a battery charger out for the Wii? Can you use non-Wii NiMH batteries in the Wii-Motes?

          Re: Wii Beginner's Help

          Re: Wii Beginner's Help

I only have two nunchucks and I've never had the need for more than that yet. I have 4 wiimotes which I have used all of them when friends come over. I really recommend getting the Nyco Wii Remote battery charger. I got mine from Gamespot.

As for the classic controller, I think it makes the SNES games on the VC much better. If you don't plan on getting many VC games, buying this controller probably isn't worth it.

I use a 2 GB SD card that I got from TigerDirect.com for $2 after rebates. I haven't really used it though, I have a few pics and vids on it for the photo channel. I have about 6 game saves and 12 VC games and all of them are stored on the internal memory with plenty of space to spare. So I don't think an SD card is a must yet until games start letting you play mp3's or something off a card.

As for the games, these are thoughts on the ones I have:

SSX Blur: Probably my favorite game. It's very deep, makes good use of the wiimote, and very challenging. At first it was a bit too challenging, but after a bit you get comfortable with the controls and it just becomes fun challenging.

Zelda: Probably the most impressive and complete game that I've played on the Wii. Makes really good use of the wiimote and it is the best of the series.

Super Paper Mario: Pretty fun, really corny. I flew through the game because it was so easy, but it was still fun and I'm still playing it. I'm at 40 hours now and I beat it at 24 hours, so there's plenty of stuff to do after you beat the main game.

Tony Hawk Downhill Jam: A fun racing game and good array of events. It doesn't have too much replayability I don't think once you master the game but it is fun to play. It was my favorite game when the Wii first launched.

Need for Speed: Fun racing game that uses the wiimote a lot. Lots of control schemes. It's a bit hard to control at first because you have to get used to the wiimote scheme, but it is a fun game if you like street racers.

Wii Play: Fun by yourself for about an hour. Fun with a group of friends a lot.

Sonic and the Secret Rings: Control scheme is a bit annoying at times. I had a hard time slowing down and doing the attacks. The audio is pretty lame too. But all in all a fun Sonic game. I never finished it because SSX came out a week after it and totally took time away from the game.

I bought Elebits and just didn't like it too much. It was way too crazy for me. I couldn't get the navigation down. I'm not a big shooter game though at all. I also rented WarioWare and wasn't too fond of it. I'm not a straight mini-game player either, so I couldn't really get into this. I like the Mario Party's better than WarioWare, but WarioWare definitely had some creative ways of using the wiimote.

          Hope some of that helped.

            Re: Wii Beginner's Help

It helped a lot aukevin, I appriciate the response.

I'm leaning towards Super Paper Mario now, hearing that it is on the easy side is a good thing, I need a game like that to play with the girlfriend. She loves the early Mario games, from what I've seen SPM is similar too those games, but of course with the 3D thrown in and some RPG elements, do you think a fan of the early Mario's would enjoy SPM? Are the RPG elements a huge part of the game?

WiiPlay seems to be exactly as you described it, I enjoyed playing it for right around an hour before I was bored and put WiiSports back in.

The difficulty(and therefore depth) of SSX Blur is grabbing my interest now, I read a couple of reviews, it seems like it would provide a lot of replay. I'm trying to decide between that and The Godfather as my second game, I never played the Xbox/360 or PS2/3 verisons of the game, and I hear the use of the WiiMote is pretty great.

            Thanks again for the help.

              Re: Wii Beginner's Help

I don't think you can go wrong with Super Paper Mario. Just a fun, well put together title. SSX Blur has been intriguing to me for awhile too. Just haven't had time for any new games to this point so I'll probably wait for a price drop on that one.

Well I never finished it. It is fun though and it is fun multiplayer. Finding the critters and getting enough, fast enough to upgrade gun to find the harder ones etc...
It's not something you'll play hours on end but a good pick up and play game.

Thanks for the info. We never have a ton of time to play anyway, so a pick up and play game is just what we're looking for.

That's cool. How are you doing with SSX? It took me a few times playing to get how to do the uber move tricks in the game. They are difficult to pull off at first, but become very rewarding later on in the game when you can nail them and rack up big time trick points?

I've not played anything on the system except for Super Mario Bros and Punch Out. There's not much other than the Virtual Console stuff that interests me yet.
