PS3 1080i Issue

Was the issue of the PS3 not being able to scale games to 1080i ever fixed?

Yes and no.

Yes it will now display a 1080i signal if the game was written for it. If the game does not support 1080i then the PS3 will downscale to 720p. Before the system updates the system would automatically select 480p.

It's hit and miss. Any game written for 1080i usually is a second or third party game. To my knowledge Sony only uses 480p, 720p, and 1080p for their first party games.

I think this won't be the case in future titles; I remember reading on the Official Sony PS boards that 1080i will be supported from now on.

They are and it should have been in there from day one because not everyone is willing to throw out their 1080i displays in favor of 1080p. MLB The Show (PS3) does supports 1080i.

Microsoft was more inclusive from the beginning by not forcing 1080i owners to ditch their sets and make them buy a 1080p display. Later they added 1080p, so i'm glad Sony's joined the party by adding 1080i to their first party games.

Yup, I was just about to post that as an example. The Show is one of their first party titles that has included support for 1080i.

To be honest, I don't see a difference b/w that and 720p. I kept switching back and forth and I just don't see it.

You should use the resolution that matches your TV to prevent additional processing.

You mean its native resolution? I guess I'll have to look that up.... but if I don't visually see a difference what does it matter?

Framerate, you'll get better FPS in 720p than you will in 1080i. Some guys it's very slight and others you might see it sputter. I compared the two and I just set my PS3 to 720p, games look great in that mode.

Can someone answer this?

I own a Samsung 23" LCD and it supports 480p, 720p and 1080i. It's the model MS used on their 360 kiosks.
