Wii vs 360: Help me decide my future gaming

So, i'm looking for a new console with a tight budget and need all of you to help me make an informed decision. There can only be one winner., I can't afford both.

    The situation is as following:

    I currently own a Megadrive (Genesis), PS1, Dreamcast and Xbox. I also have a "ok" computer, P4 3Ghz, 2,25 Gig RAM, GF8600GT, 19' Monitor.

I only have a standard 32 widescreen TV and no money to buy a HDTV so that is out of the question. My monitor have no conection to hook up the 360 via VGA cables either. So the gaming will be done on my standard 32 TV.

I like racing and sportsgame on my consoles. My next game will be Madden 08.

As far as online goes I have a wireless LAN but I can't hook up the 360 via cable due to apartment structure. So Wii online and 360 offline.

So, what should I buy? The Wii will be something new and complement my computer I think. Madden 08 sound really good on Wii with the controllers and all. The we have MArio down the lineand Zelda already out.

On the other hand, 360 offers Next gen Madden and NHL wich are my two favourtite sports. Racing also looks good with Cloin McRae DIRT and Forza 2. But is it worth it without a HDTV?

Also, my friend has a 360 and it sounds like an airplane while the Wii as I understand it is totally quiet.

    The Wii is cheaper.

What should I do? Help me out guys, I want to make an informed decision!

If you like sports and racing, get the 360.

Re: Wii vs 360: Help me decide my future gaming

Based on the fact you don't have and can't buy an HDTV for some time and you are on a tight budget, buying a Wii is a no brainer to me. You also mentioned you don't like the noise of the 360 as well, you also need to factor the unreliability of the 360. If you plan on getting a 360 you seriously need to consider an extended warranty as these systems are still problematic.

I think you would be happier with the Wii, it's getting most EA Sports titles although i'm not sure about Nascar 08 and yes forget about Dirt for the WIi because it was designed for the PS3 and 360.

Nintendo has had a solid track record in the last ten years for building reliable hardware and yes the Wii is ultra quiet you can't even hear it running. Oh and the games costs $10 less than the PS3 and 360 games.

I agree with Rod. Personally, I own them both, and I couldn't live without my 360.

Having a Wii as your only console would be pretty bad. Not enough games.

True but owning a 360 on a tight budget and having it crap out on him after the warranty is over is even worse IMO. And he has no immediate plans for HDTV. The Wii has some pretty good first party games coming out this year as well as third party sports games.

The 360 is the best next gen console for racing and sports. Period.

The 360's games are great offline. I enjoy playing through them in the single player mode, getting my skills up, then going online. You don't need a 360 hooked up to the internet to enjoy it.

the 360 is still great on non HDTV's, you will still tell it's better than the xbox. I have my 360 right next to my PC and monitor, and don't have anywhere near the sound you say your friend has. I don't think the 360 is any much louder than the xbox, ps2, etc.

the 360 is the best console to have right now. It has a steady stream of new quality games, while having games that you can get used pretty cheaply. The Wii sounds alright, but I'm not a fan of nintendo's "release a game every 6 months" policy they've had since the N64.

How does your monitor hook up to your PC? Does it look like this?:

Because if it does, then you can purchase the 360 VGA HD AV Cable and you'll be able to hook up your 360 to your monitor.

That is completely relative. If you buy 20+ games a year then, yes, the Wii would probably struggle to keep you entertained all year long. If you buy less than 10 games a year then the Wii would have enough entertaining games to keep you busy year-round, and that isn't even considering the VC games.

If money is the main issue the Wii is the easy choice, $150 cheaper for the system, plus $10 less per game.

However, the 360 is going to be much better for sports and racing games. Even if EA delivers a fun version of Madden for Wii, the 360/PS3 version is goign to be a more complete game from top to bottom.

I have had a 360 since September but haven't played it since March. I own it for sports games and decided not to pick up the MLB game, so once NBA 2K7 wore out, I haven't touched the system. The Wii provides a completely unique experience, I am enjoying games that would would never have considered picking up for a normal system(The Godfather, for example, I passed on the Xbox and 360 versions, but I am loving the controls on the Wii version).

For me personally, I could't go without NCAA Football on an xbox controller, so if I had to chose one system it would be the 360. But the Wii is a completely unique system that will keep you busy. It pretty much comes down to cost vs. sports/racing games.

Well, the cable is attached directly to the monitor so I can't connect the 360 VGA-cable to the monitor. Or do I connect the 360 VGA cable to the monitor-cable and not the monitor itself?

then your monitor has the male part of the VGA plug coming off the monitor, to be plugged into your pc. If you get the MS official VGA adapter, it will come with a little lovely gender changer adapter that will allow you to plug your 360 VGA plug into it.

Wow, the 360 just got ahead in the competion. Only a little though. It still is more expensive and I can't use it online unless I buy the VERY VERY VERY EXPENSIVE WLAN adapter.

Madden 08 with Wii controllers looks nice and the part of it being quiet is great. My friends 360 actually used to be mine. I sold him it due to me needing new tires to my car. But I think it must have sounded way more than it should, it is a core version. Another friend got premium version not to long ago and I don't think it sounded as much as my other friends does.

I don't exclusive play sportstitles though even if it may have sounded so. Mario and Zelda looks realy nice. I also think that FPS games might be more fun on the Wii once they get the controlls done right, i can't stand using a regular controller playing FPS.

But the 360 is currently holding the lead due to next-gen Madden and NHL. Anyone know how FIFA will be played on the Wii?

Keep the arguments coming for both machines. Really appreciate your help guys.

Which is why I went on to say that the 360 is clearly the best choice if sports & racing games are his primary conerns. My only point was that some people here buy 3-5 games a month and those people would probably get bored with the Wii because it isn't getting as many titles as 360/PS3 right now. However, most people won't be buying nearly as many games and for a 'normal' gamer I think the Wii's library will be more than enough to keep you busy. The additional 'fallback' of having a ton of VC titles to chose from if the normal releases dry up is another plus for thte Wii.

The breakdown in Carolus Rex's case, as I see it, goes like this:

                            Wii:
                            +Cost
                            +Online

                            360:
                            +Sports & racing games

It is really just a matter of where your priorities are. If you have to have your sports games, spend the extra money to get the 360, I know I couldn't do without them which is why I own a 360.

If there is nothing really interesting coming up in the next month or two I would suggest waiting to see how the Wii version of Madden 08 is, as that seems to be a big sticking point for you. If people enjoy that game it makes the case for a Wii stronger, but if it is bad you probably wouldn't want to buy a Wii now and then not be able to play a good version of Madden.

                              Sounds like a plan.

On the other hand I could get a Wii now and play Zelda until madden arrives. But if it is bad then I would have bought it in vain.
