Future 360 Games Will Require the HDD?

Not too sure if this has been posted yet, but if it has please delete.

Future 360 Games Will Require the HDD?

The only 360 game right now that I can think of requiring a HDD would be FFXI. Only piece that is puzzling below is that they mention the Core being dropped which I thought it wasn't.

While many were surprised by the fact that MS was planning to drop the Core from it's SKU line-up, it finally helped XF make sense of something we stumbled upon late last week. Recent rumors regarding games being "dumbed down" abound, coupled with word from our contacts last week that the the Core was being discontinued had lead us to believe MS was about to make a big change to the way 360 games are made.

As many people will remember, the original XBOX was capable of some very large games that contained great AI and graphics for the time. To put it simply, this was possible because the data on the DVD was able to be compressed quite heavily, because it was then streamed off the disc and uncompressed in the HDD that every original XBOX had. This allowed for shorter (and less frequent) load times and also allow for much more data to be placed on the DVD.

XF has learned that MS has plans for the 360 to do the very same thing. Games requiring the HDD will initially have a "HDD required" logo clearly viewable on the front of the case [seen above], as well being listed as requiring the HDD on the back info panel of the case.

No word yet on the first game that will start this trend of requiring the HDD. But we have some ideas. XF will elaborate on this story as soon as we have more. While it would be fun to "speculate" at possible games that will require the HDD, we'll stick to what we already know

I thought there was a COD 4 box photo that showed a HDD required logo on it.

Here it is. Looks like it shows a HDD and a memory card on the front.

          The Core isn't going anywhere.

"The Storage Required icon should be disregarded. It was simply included as part of the concept artwork by the artist, to give a better representation of what the final box art would look like with icons and logos on it. The game can still be played by users with and without Storage devices (HDD / Memory Card). Obviously you can not save if you are without storage, but that goes for every Xbox 360 title."

Re: Future 360 Games Will Require the HDD?

If the HDD indeed makes the 360 capable of producing bigger games with more textures/higher res textures/cleaner images, more cars/players/models on screen, more levels/fields/tracks,etc, and less loading times, then it only makes sense to use the HDD as much as possible. One of the main reasons I bought an XBox was because of the built in 8 MB hardrive and now in this generation Sony has a built in harddrive in all of their PS3 models. If it would enrich the gaming experience on 360 at all, then I think the HDD should be made standard across all SKUs. To me, that's common sense.

I have a core with no HDD, and I'm proud of it haha.

I bought a headset the other day and the guy at best buy was like, "did you lose your headset?"....weird question in many ways. I could have broken it or something, I'm not sure how you would lose it. But anyway I told him I had a core and he said he didn't know anybody actually had one of those things. I laughed.

I really do hope that games will start to require the HDD. I'm sorry it will alienate the Core base, but they'll have to go out and buy a HDD if they want to enjoy the game. I think that this is one of the reasons why its also been adding to the heat of the system...................because the DVD is just continuosly spinning and we know how hot it gets in that system after you have taken a game out, the damn disc is so hot I can cook an egg on it. By caching info off of the HDD less stress on the DVD drive too.

I agree. It would suck for the core owners, but there would be many more opportunities. In fact, I can see a day when we will all need the larger HDD, not just the 20gig or whatever it is. When the 360 lauched it should've been the 20gig and the Elite.

They should of never had the core to begin with! Kind of a step backwards imo for what was to become the next level in gaming.

you'd think MS would want more people with HDD's. It would drive even more XBL Marketplace sales. Movies and tv shows are all there, and the more people with a standard HDD the better.

You don't need an expensive new media drive when you have a big enough HDD.

They need to require hard drives for games. I don't know of anyone who owns just a core without a hard drive or why they would waste money on a system without a hard drive.
