I'm in the middle of a 360-to-PS3 switch, so I'll be calling Microsoft sometime this week to cancel Live. I think I'll record it for entertainment's sake and post it if it's noteworthy.

provided you overcome the boredom and the length of the call to do something that should be easier than MS makes it.

LOL, exactly. Does anyone remember the guy who recorded his call to AOL to cancel his America Online subscription? Hopefully my call won't be as painful.

it wont be. All they'll do is say it takes a few moments to process your request, then ask you why you're canceling...like they care. The guy I had commented that it's a shame since I had xbox live for awhile and could just transfer the tag to a friend.

so they do toss up a few softballs for you if you feel like going off on them for the xbox dying. They don't really try to talk you out of it hard though. They get too many calls a day to try that I suppose.

Its funny like in some of these recordings how the CSR goes crazy once they find out they are being recorded.

Yeah thats about what I get when I cancel accounts (ive had alot, halo days) but one time they even offered me a game to keep the account. I declined because I was selling my xbox to get a 360, so a orginal xbox game was worthless.

Unless you have a CC on file if you ever bought MS points.

I doubt they can legally charge your credit card if you didn't use it to sign up for Xbox Live originally.

When you sign up for Xbox Live with your credit card, somewhere in the fine print it says something about the auto-renewal. You have to agree to all their "Terms of Service" when you sign up. This is one of the TOS. I highly doubt they can take a credit card from a separate purchase and use that to charge you if you signed up with a subscription card.

I've never used any sort of subscription card though, so I don't know. Do they make you provide a CC when you sign up with these? It's Microsoft, I wouldn't be surprised.

also, for anyone's future reference. Do keep that reference number. I got charged today, even though I went through the cancellation process. I was told it was done, and even received an email.

I couldn't understand what the Indian guy was saying, but it sounds like it's done now. Didn't even get my money back, but didn't feel like arguing with a guy I couldn't understand. This is a such a horrible hassle to cancel that you need to be on top of it if you are going to do it. I used to be a big 360 guy, but their horrible customer service and hoop jumping has turned me off on everything MS. I'll never buy one of their products ever again.

I also advise that no one sign up for xbox live with a credit card.

I was able to let my gold subscription run out and my account's reverted to a silver without automatically renewing. MS has my credit card number too thanks to Rock Band... never had any trouble with them though.

Granted, the way I signed up for XBL was through one of those 12+1 cards you get at Best Buy and I made sure that in my account options on the XBOX that auto-renew was disabled.

I just canceled my account w/ 'Julie" and it went really smooth. I JUST traded in my dying 360 to get a PS3 and no longer needed the service. I tole the CSR that I was tired of game freezing and DDE's on my games. She asked if I had the 360 plugged into a surge protector (I did) and she said that was one of the major causes of 360's dying.
Whether this is true or not I have no idea, but it was an interesting bit of info. She said it was actually in the manual(I never read it obviously). Anyway, she was easy to deal with and didn't give me any garbage or try to talk me out of canceling.

Thanks for this thread. It ended up saving me some money. I just made the switch to ps3 and completely forgot that my live account was automatically charging my CC. I just called up and cancled and it went pretty smooth. I got some Indian chick who I couldn't understand to well, but at least she was really polite and it only took about ten minutes after everything was said and done.

Thanks to the TC. Just called and canceled mine after forgetting that I had a year subscription. Not much hassle, but what exactly do you do with the confirmation # they give you? Thanks!
