    360 - Cracked Disc

A pretty random question, I thought somebody might have some experience with this....

I dropped my open case with NCAA 2008 in it last night, the disc was placed on the holder and it fell onto a hardwood floor and popped out. I scanned the back, no noticable scratches, no big deal. Then I play today and get a weird glitch, restart and then I play a whole game fine. I take it out after I'm done and I notice the inner ring has two cracks in it. This is the clear plastic ring with the Xbox logos on it. Obviously there is no data there, but I'm wondering if playing this disc in the 360 could cause problems with my console? These things seem pretty touchy and having a disc spin a bit off seems like it could cause some issues. I played for about an hour and 30 with the disc cracked, and then when I took it out I snapped the cracks back into place so the surface felt smooth again.

Not sure if anyone has delt with this before, I've dropped plenty of games but this is the first time I've cracked one, not really sure if this is going to cause problems with my console or not.

If you still have your receipt I would take it back for an exchange just to be on the safe side.

the game will just lock up or give you DDE occasionally. I have a few that can still play, although they developed cracks since I leave games in the 360. I never even use the cases.

I think cracked disc happen more than likely from heat stress. Remember the DVD drive is sitting right above and very close to the massive heatsink which sometimes pegs 212 deg F.

yep, another gem from the great 360. This was the first console I've had games crack over time due to me leaving them in the drive when not playing. They cool up and heat up over and over sitting in there.

          what a POS.

            Re: 360 - Cracked Disc

Had it for over a month now, so I can't return the game.

If it is my 360 cracking the discs, is that a legit reason to trade in a console under warranty to Best Buy? I would definitely want to trade it in, but I'm not sure how the store would accept the argument that it cracks my games, I'm not goign to be able to prove it to them in the store. I guess I could say it freezes a lot or something.

Thanks for the feedback, after posting last night I began to wonder if it may have been the console cracking the disc, I can't imagine I would have missed the cracks after dropping it on the floor.

When I got my warranty from Best Buy, they seemed pretty convincing that you can simply return your 360 whenever you'd like. I doubt they'll hook it up and see what's actually wrong with your 360.

Although, if your HD has to be returned (I think so), you should try to save them somewhere. Perhaps invest in a Memory Card.

I wonder if EA makes games on cheaper discs. I had the same problem happen with my UEFA CL 2006-07 and every time I've heard of this happening it's with an EA game.

Every time I tried to play my UEFA CL after the crack, it wouldn't even load up except once, and then I got a DDE after 30 min. I've heard Best Buy will give you a new copy of the game even without a receipt as long as it's the same game and they have it in stock. Haven't had time to try the swap with my game yet but will do so probably tomorrow.

As for playing the cracked game on your 360? I would advise against it. I'm not an expert, but with the 360 already being unreliable, the last thing I would like to do is continually play a game with a cracked inner ring.

By the way, I've no cracking issues with any other game so I don't think it's the 360.

                  Re: 360 - Cracked Disc

Thanks for the feedback/advice. I think I am going to push forward playing it, if my 360 gives out then I will use the BB warranty. I will definitely look into a memory card if I do have to trade in the sysetm.

If I didn't pay for the extended warranty I would probably get rid of the game or buy a new copy, but as it is, I feel alright taking my chances with a free backup console if it breaks. I played for a couple of hours tonight(same game) without problems.
