PS3 Audio Problems

Generally I don't like to create threads to discuss problems, but I'm growing desperate ...

My PS3 is hooked up via component cables for video, and I use optical for audio. Thus far, it's worked great and I get 5.1 on all my games.

Until I bought NCAA, and just recently Madden. I power on the system and the symphony music plays in surround, then when I put in either of these games, I get an error message on my receiver and no sound at all. All my other games play great, just these two EA titles don't produce sound when I put them in.

It might be worthy to note that I have a panasonic home theatre in a box that doesn't have a lot of outputs, so I use a switch to alternate channels between 5.1 on my TV and on my PS3. Today, I bought some HDMI cables for the PS3 to see if that would fix things and swapped out video and audio on my PS3 settings and I finally got stereo audio on those games, but no 5.1.

What's going on??

Yeah I'm totally perplexed. No sound AT ALL through the same hookups that give me 5.1 for all my PS3 games and blu ray movies.

After having bought an HDMI connection for the system, I'm not really sure where to go with this. I already returned NCAA once and Madden has the same problem, so that's 3 EA games that don't give me any sound.

You're not alone. Last week I downloaded the demos for both NCAA 08 and DiRT. Because I'm the only one in my family who likes North American sport I have to play a lot of my games with my 5.1 headset and I was surprised to find that there was no sound for NCAA 08. It works fine if I use the stereo speakers from the TV (so my family had to suffer after all)

The DiRT demo was fine though.

Edit: By the way I'm using a SCART connection, which means my 5.1 headset receives it's sound from the Optical socket.
