How do you clear a ps3's cache and what does it do?

I don't think there is an option to do so. The 360 HDD and the PS3 HDD are used in different ways so I don't think its necessary to clear with PS3 HDD like it is with the 360 sometimes. I've never had to clear the 360 cache since launch. Not really necessary unless you are experiencing problems.
