RUMOR: Microsoft Plans Motion Sensing Controller

If what we’re hearing out of Saratoga, California is true, Xbox 360 owners can expect to be playing motion sensing games, much like that of the Wii or PS3, by the end of next year. The details are still sketchy, but it appears a first-party add-on to existing controllers may be the delivery method of the technology. More after the jump:

Hardcore gamers have known for sometime that it’s not too difficult to add motion-sensing functionality to the 360. With homebrew add-ons being worked on for the last year or so like the Xilt mod , it seemed only a matter of time before MS decided to release their own peripheral.

It appears Microsoft has contracted the Saratoga, California firm, Gyration to handle the peripheral. If that name sounds familiar, it’s for good reason. Gyration is the company responsible for the prototype designs of the Nintendo Wii-mote, which we all know has become a huge success. Most recently, the company was in the spotlight for creating a motion-sensing remote for Microsoft’s Media Center.

While details are still a bit thin on when “exactly” we’ll see this technology, we’re still excited at the prospect of new interactivity with our Xbox 360 games. There's also no word on whether or not the new add-on will incorporate the motion-sensing technology that MS successfully patented last year.

can't fault them for wanting a controller that does this for a game or two. It will never be integrated like the wii or even like whatever the ps3 controller is called.

Whatever adds to the experience is all good, I guess. Honestly the motion sensor thing has never been a big deal for me. If I wanted to hit a baseball, i'd go to the park.

Re: RUMOR: Microsoft Plans Motion Sensing Controller

People SLAMMED Sony for making their SIXAXIS, now watch everyone say that because MS is doing it, its all good and will be better than the Wii. I have both consoles, but seriously MS better catch some major heat for doing this so late if it turns out to be a major component for their new games later on. How often are you gonna keep screwing your customers? All hypothetical of course, I know its a rumor.

Only the XBOX 360 Computer Entertainment System can provide true next-generation graphics, AI, and motion sensing capabilities due to it's superior processing power, GPU, and perfectly created development tools that will no doubt lead to an even larger amount of AAA games to add to it's already growing video game library.

Ugh, why do this now? My 360 is just fine without motion sensing and I never use the 6 Axis PS3 controls as they suck. As long as this doesn't become required for much, I guess I really don't care.

I don't like this idea. Too late now, let Wii have its fun with the motion controls.

that was because they seemingly tacked it in late with the intent to piggyback some wii hype by making it a central control scheme in most games. However, I don't see this 360 controller being more than something that a baby fist full of games even use.

Re: RUMOR: Microsoft Plans Motion Sensing Controller

Every major console in the next generation will have full motion control. It's the nature of the game and how this industry is evolving. It's not too difficult to follow the $$$ trail.

I'm happy about this development, because IMO motion control blows away old-fashioned button pressing. Bring me closer to the game as "inside" of the game as possible, please.

I just hope they use the motion control correctly. I'm playing 2 awesome PS3 games (The Show and Uncharted) and both use the Sixaxis in tacked on not useful ways...Basically seemed like "Oh, we have sixaxis, how can we appease Sony?"
